Andrew Mayne is one of the best kept secrets in magic. His ideas are very creative and most of the effects he thinks up are refreshingly different and practical. Most of all, Andrew makes you think. His concepts lead to lots of presentational possibilities and have been an inspiration to other young magical thinkers, myself included. I have almost all of his products and I can definitely say that this 20-something's ideas are getting better and better.

His latest offering, Shock FX, contains some great material and a couple of real gems that I'm sure will find their way into many professional acts. A lot of geek magic is presented and if you're into that stuff you're going to be in your element here. Andrew has some great variations on classic geek tricks and some new ideas that you'll use. Even if you're not into this kind of bizarre magic year-round, there is enough material on Shock FX for any magician to put together a solid parlor show to use as an extra income stream during the Halloween season.

And now for the Gems: As anyone who does standup magic knows, new material for the stage or platform is pretty hard to find. This is mainly because once a performer creates a good standup effect they want to keep it all to themselves. On Shock FX, Andrew was actually crazy enough to give away his method for a bowling ball production that is worth the price of the tape for anyone doing standup magic. I can't wait to try this out in my act and I know you'll want to also. This is the kind of thinking that makes me buy everything that falls out of Andrew's brain. An effect called 'Bob Roach: Psychic Entertainer' is also great. Andrew realizes that magic is supposed to be entertaining and this effect is a perfect example. I limit myself to only one card trick in my standup comedy magic act and 'Bob Roach' will fill that slot perfectly in comedy clubs and for any audience made up of teenagers. I also love good, impromptu magic and Andrew's Pencil through cheek is one that can be done anytime, anywhere.

When I buy a book or a video, if I can find one thing that I'll use, I'm thrilled. In Shock FX I found three. If you're into bizarre magic at all you'll find lots more and most of all, this well-produced video will make magicians think. As long as Andrew Mayne keeps putting out material there is simply no excuse for boring magic.
