Has this kid hit puberty yet?
OK, that's not fair. His age doesn't matter in the least. It's just what went through my head when I saw the performance on this DVD.
Actually, Daniel Lachman seems like a very bright, well-spoken, personable young man. He's the kind of kid I wish we had more of in this country.
A few days ago I wrote a scathing review of a trick called Blunt. It has a similar theme to Compression: visual alteration of a writing implement. In retrospect, my problems with Blunt were caused by all of the “other effects” that were supposed to be done with the prop. If the creator had stuck to the basic idea of sharpening a blunt pencil in your hand, I probably would have been a happier reviewer. At least I can find a motivation for that simple action.
While I can't find any earth-shattering reason for shortening a Bic pen, I can think of quite a few rather humorous lines to accompany such a move. I don't think this was intended to be a serious mystery, so all is well.
The effect is visual and startling. It's basically angle-proof and requires no skill whatsoever. You'll need some basic craft skills to make the fekes, but nothing a third-grader couldn't handle.
