I’ve reviewed Big Blind Media products before, and this DVD is much of the same. The production quality is top notch, and the magic quality is average, but this one has something that other BBM projects haven’t had. New, simple, and usable ideas.
David Forrest is a charming guy that isn’t trying to hard to impress us, or make us laugh. He seems very comfortable in his own skin. The effects we are paying for are fairly good. Sure there are some effects that should never be performed for a layperson. Some effects like Jack Ass have too many unnecessary actions and confusing moments. Other effects have unfinished stories or presentations that don’t make sense. With that said, instead of being negative for the rest of the review, I’m going focus on what this DVD has done right.
The gaffs supplied are well made, and are used in some interesting ways. There is a great gimmick that forces and vanishes a card from the deck. While not entirely original, the gimmick is sort of a pain to make and the one supplied is top notch! It’s the perfect solution to forcing a card, and vanishing it from the deck before it appears in an impossible location!
Amidst the mostly average card material there are some excellent stand outs! “Wee Wee Mentalist” is a fun card effect that is really charming and leaves your spectator with a great souvenir. “Superfly” is sort of a surreal and charming effect that is refreshingly different. A drawing of a fly not only finds the selected card, but it crosses out your previously incorrect prediction and fixes it. Both of these effects have really interesting ideas in both method and plot for many card enthusiasts to explore.
“Blurred” is definitely the best effect on the DVD. It’s a color changing deck effect that is simple, visual, and looks like magic instead of messing around with cards. It has some very convincing displays, and is extremely practical. This looks like the perfect opener for a card set.
In my opinion, those three effects and all the gaffs are good enough to warrant the asking price. Professional or amateur, I think you will find something of value here. I’m going to be generous and give this three stars for three solid, above average effects.
