Real World Magic

Dave Jones

(Based on 1 review)
Join your host Dave Jones as he reveals nine of his favorite routines. Featuring material performed at "4F'S" and explained for the first time on DVD!

"The Brialliant thing about this DVD is that the magic is great for both close-up and stage workers. Another winner from rsvpmagic.com." WAYNE DOBSON

FEATURED ROUTINES INCLUDE:

Notes - The trick that everyone's talking about. Written notes magically appear on a deck of playing cards, until the selected card is revealed in an amazing way. This is the Dave's "underground" routine first featured in Jerry Sadowitz's "Crimp" magazine.

VOODOO HEAT - Burn a lasting impression in your audiences' minds!

GLASSIQUE - A truly repeatable routine using sound in a unique way!

REAL WORLD BILL SWITCH - Dave's original version of the $100.00 bill switch using notes from around the world.

LINKING FINGER RINGS - Dave's original version takes all the clumsy moves away, creating a routine that plays stronger than any other.

BATMAN'S ACES - A brand new four ace sequence inspired by Jack Nicholson!

BILLY BOXING GLOVES - It's gloves off as two spectators lose their money in a contest that can only end in laughs!

TEN - Ten cards. Ten people. Dave's trademark card revelation that's perfect for both stage and close-up.

SERIALITY - A sneak preview performance of a routine in which you correctly guess three serial numbers, from three spectators' banknotes, only to blow them away with a prediction that was made before the show!

Dave Jones is an abundantly talented magician from England, and the only reason the magic community doesn't hear more from him is because he lives alone on a secluded island and communicates exclusively by smearing messages onto cliff faces with his own excrement... JUST KIDDING! He doesn't live alone... HEYO! Alright, with that out of my system, I first discovered the magic of Dave Jones at the 2005 Fechter's Flunging Gangr Fprolcik (I never spell it right anyway so now I just type it in without looking). During his lecture, he demonstrated not only a gift for performing (he's both funny and charming), but also tremendous technical chops (he can execute a GODDAMN ONE-HANDED PALM FROM THE CENTER OF THE MOTHER-FREAKIN' DECK!!!). This DVD gives you a chance to see all of that (except the center-palm), and more. There are eight routines and every one is what we in North America would call a "worker" (the British refer to them as "jimmyjammies"). They can all be done close up, but four of them - "Voodoo Heat," "Linking Finger Rings," "Billy Boxing Gloves" and "Ten" - also play big enough to be performed on stage. The first of these, "Voodoo Heat," is one of my favorites, a rich stand-up routine in which the heat from a cigarette that should be burning your hand is somehow transferred to the spectator's hand, who suddenly shrieks in surprise. The method involves a well-known principle, but Dave has put some serious thought into turning this single-climax effect into a fully scripted jimmyjammy.

Among my other favorites is "Billy Boxing Gloves," a significant upgrade of U.F. Grant's "Million Dollar Bill Mystery." Two borrowed bills are torn down the middle, then half of each is returned to a spectator while the magician restores the other two halves into one full bill, then pockets it. The spectators, now left with only half a bill each, are then handed boxing gloves and invited to fight for the remaining money. Finally, after some fun with this, they're directed to reach into their respective gloves, wherein each finds a half bill that matches the other half bill in his or her hand.

There's no shortage of great close-up tricks on here too, including "Notes," an inspired card-to-wallet routine (originally published in The Crimp) wherein, once a card has been chosen, signed and returned to the deck, a message appears on the top card of the pack that tells the magician what to do next (e.g., cut the deck). With each subsequent step he follows, a new message arrives on top, until finally the magician and audience are directed to look in the magician's wallet for one last message and a surprise.

The remaining tricks - "Creditable," "Batman's Aces" and "Glassique" - are also fun, and serve to round out one of the better lecture DVDs I've seen in awhile. If you liked Simon Lovell's Methods Behind the Madness, or Shaun McCree's Mix N' Mingle, you should definitely pick up Dave Jones' Real World Magic.
