Voodoo Doll

Top Hat Productions

(Based on 2 reviews)

The Magician shows a realistic looking voodoo doll. It is placed in the spectators hand to look at. It is just a little straw doll. When the magician lays the doll in his palm, it suddenly comes to life rising like a mummy out of a casket and stands up straight! Spectators will believe that an invisible force is making it rise up and down. The doll is completely under your control. No wires or threads.

A magical effect that you will always carry with you.

This is definitely one of my favorite effects, largely because of the unusual nature of the prop.
I am often tempted to own effects for selfish reasons, already being a collector of small and novel objects. This effect used to be in pencil form, but the usage of a straw doll gives the levitation an additional support point-2 legs, as opposed to one pencil end. I don't show this often, and indeed it's not something that the average person would pull out of their pocket. My other 'common object' levitations involve playing cards or a credit card. The Voodoo Doll instantly sets the stage for a more mysterious story-which cannot just be introduced 'cold'. Like the haunted key, the doll works nicely in conjunction with a haunted hank (preferably Eugene's Burger's version!). Additionally, I look out for an equally exotic box to introduce this prop from,
which starts thing off with 'whats in THAT box?'-sometimes just the SIGHT of a unusual prop triggers off a spectator's NATURAL curiosity-(that's all I need!) While I haven't distressed mine, the instructions suggest burning the Doll a bit to add character. I also love this because I can't think of ANY other magic trick that's made out of STRAW! It LOOKS as primitive as the magical powers the effect itself implies. Not a 'quickie', but best saved for when the conversation turns 'otherworldly'.

The doll is a real conversation piece. Doing this would be great at a party when the subject turns to "strange" things.

It could also be done for walk around, but I am one who believes the atmosphere has to be right to get the maximum impact from certain tricks.

The doll is under your control without magnets, wires, threads, etc. Finding the exact way to hold the doll might require a bit of work for some people. For others, it will be automatic.

With some erie music and a good story line, you can take the straw doll from the spectator's hand, put it in your hand and make it come to life.

The lower rating is because I don't think this is for everyone. If "weird" is your style, it is a small investment.
