Eccentricks DVD

Charlie Frye

(Based on 2 reviews)

Now on DVD, the original ECCENTRICKS, teaching numerous offbeat sleight of hand routines and juggling stunts. Many of the tricks on the DVD have been featured in my Eccentricks columns in JUGGLE and MAGIC magazines. Now you can see them in action and take advantage of the best learning tool available for mastering material of this nature. If you're a sleight of hand aficionado or aspire to immerse yourself into this fascinating blend of magic and skill, then you'll find lots of fun moves and routines to add to your repertoire including:

* comedic versions of the MULTIPLYING BILLIARD BALLS, and CUPS & BALLS.

* An eccentric SPOON BENDING routine introducing many of my favorite sight gags such as the VANISHING NAIL FILE.

* JUGGLING GAGS that require no skill whatsoever, and a host of more challenging stunts such as DICE STACKING and COIN MANIPULATION.

* Also included: THE CARD GRAB featuring the amazing MIDAIR PASS.

Whether you’re an experienced entertainer or a dedicated enthusiast, the fun and challenging material presented in ECCENTRICKS will have your audiences laughing and applauding all at once.

Even if you don't learn anything from this DVD, it's still wildly entertaining to watch.
But there are some brilliant things to learn if you are so inclined.

A talented juggler, clown and magician, Charlie Frye often combines all three skills to create interesting, highly personalized routines. In fact, it's his gift for routining that forms the basis for this DVD.

Drawing from his eclectic tastes in gags, bits and tricks, Charlie assembles fun, well-motivated sequences, most of which he performs in an old-time silent-movie/vaudeville style. The style may or may not speak to you (I think Charlie executes it extremely well -- I just question whether or not there is an audience anymore for this kind of broad, comedic mugging), but regardless, I believe the routines are well worth your attention.

You'll learn Charlie's versions of (and applications for) tricks like Meir Yedid's "Finger Fantasies;" Fred Baumann's "Metalogic;" Tom Mullica's amazing dice-vanish climax for any Dice Stacking routine; Max Maven's wonderful balloon-to-ball bit; W.C. Fields's fake cigar-box stack; a nicely constructed Miser's Dream that doesn't require a bucket; a lean, mean Cups-And-Balls routine; and much more.

But few of these are presented as self-contained bits -- most combine to form a larger "whole," with a beginning, middle and end exclusive of the tricks themselves. Indeed, this DVD is one of the best lessons available on adapting and routining material to suit a character.

Plus, you will likely be fooled by Charlie's "Dice Matrix" (the only true close-up effect on the DVD), which incorporates a progressive dynamic I've never seen in any of its precedents -- i.e. The dice are laid out in a square formation with the numbers one, two, three and four topmost on each respectively. As they assemble in one corner beneath a playing card, the proper number is showing on each!

All in all, Eccentricks features nothing but good gags and strong magic. Moreover, it is crammed with material, bucking the trend these days to release DVDs with only six or seven tricks. I think you'll like it.
