Mindbogglers DVD Volume 1

Harlan, Dan

L & L Publishing

(Based on 1 review)
Finally, a complete explanation of the world's best swindles from the only grifter claiming to be a magician, belly dancer, floor gambler, frogwipe salesman, former racecar driver, brain surgeon and denture wearer - Dan Harlan!

Mr. Harlan has spent over 50 of his 35 years of life learning, collecting and creating the cons used by the pros, and now he spills it all!

If you've ever wanted to fleece your friends or pull the wool over some unsuspecting stranger's eyes, then get ready to shepherd the flock straight to the shearer. Everything's here: the most perplexing puzzles, the most outrageous boasts, the most preposterous propositions, the most cunning cons and sneaky scams, all presented in a completely natural, simulated, artificial environment.

On this tape, Harlan will teach you to drink a shot without touching it, know how much change is in someone's pocket, flip a drink 360 degrees without spilling it, perform trick shots like a pool shark, toss cards like an experienced operator, take money from the bar's cash register

without ever touching it, make a dime land on its edge when dropped, sell money at a profit, and more! Don't believe it's possible? Wanna bet?

I will submit this review as a general review for each of the 4 DVDs in the Mindbogglers series.

First, I like that these are so thorough, covering more aspects of each type of bar betcha than I ever imagined existed. It's the "Marlo" or bar betchas, maybe?

The downside: In order to break up the monotony of "here's another one...", and "now here's ANOTHER one...", each DVD is filmed as if it is a real bar situation. That would be fine, except for the cheesy chit-chat that Harlan goes through before getting to each bar bet or trick. It may actually HAVE been better to follow the "and here's another one" format in order to combine them in a way that doesn't make me roll my eyes during the chatter and build-up to each stunt.

On DVD #1 there are 39 Bar Betchas. Now imagine the build-up into each one and out of each one. (eyes roll here)

I will close by giving my commendation to Dan Harlan. He has put together a venerable library of Bar Betcha, Party Puzzlers, Party Games, and Restaurant Riddles. More than I could ever compile on my own. It is simply a matter of sifting through all of them to find the ones that fit my style and usage, and that can be a daunting task on these DVDs. Thank heavens for DVD menus!
