New Wave All Backs

Dominique Duvivier

(Based on 1 review)
A typical "Duvivier Magic" trick

The deck was not manufactured in the normal way: blue-backed cards... in a red case! No faces... but backs instead! Only backs on both sides: one red side, one blue side!

But so as not to "waste" these cards, we could imagine what we could do with an ordinary deck... if one side were faces, and not backs.

We could shuffle the cards face-up, face-down, i.e. red backs and blue backs... and magically separate them!

We could even do the trick again: we would shuffle them face-up, face-down.Then we could start by creating two "normal" cards... then the rest of the deck. And what's more, the reds and the blacks would be separated!

Then we would cut the deck into four packets, and produce the four Aces! And finally, the cards from the four packets would be ribbon-spread, and we'd have the Spades in order from Ace to King, as well as the Hearts, Clubs and Diamonds!

Overview

New Wave All Backs is a multi-phase card routine which not only looks impossible but is simple in construction, well thought out and well within the skill set of most magicians. It never stops to amaze me how just one or two special cards inserted into a deck can create so many wonders. Not only is New Wave All Back an interesting plot to perform but if you have never thought about how amazing a gimmicked card or a card that has been modified can generate so much magic, New Wave All Backs should propel you into discovering more about it.

Effect

The performer takes out a deck of cards which he discovered has been misprinted by the factory. Not wanting to waste the deck, he decided to make the best of it and use them anyway. He shows not only are the cards printed with back on both sides but they were printed in two different colors. He then proceeds to perform magical surgery. First, he mixes them up and then magically separates them. He then reshuffles them and turns them into ordinary cards. After, they are separated into four pile and each pile has an Ace on top, but that’s not all every card in every pile is not only separated into a single suit but is in numerical order.

Method

The method involves four slightly gimmicked cards, that’s all. Two cards are tacked face to face and two are slightly modified. There is a little bit of sleight of hand but it’s mostly presentation.

Product Quality

The deck provided is a Bicycle deck so there are no quality issues there. The video instruction is in total 16 minutes long between performance and explanation. The instruction is in French with English subtitles. Was does irk me is that instead of getting the French translated by someone who speaks English regularly, all the translations in his videos are worded very strangely if not confusing. It takes a moment for what he is saying to sink in.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is brief but accurate. The spectators do actually see what is described in the ad copy.

Final Thoughts

As a side note, the deck provided is a mixed Bicycle deck. Although Bicycle cards are the go to cards for most card magicians, this routine will look a lot better in cards with a more solid back as the Jerry’s Nuggets he is using.
