Overview
Bill Malone Live, 3 and a half hours, solid advice, awesome magic, $30 bucks, and one magic review of Bill Malone Live! Is it Gem or is it Rubble? Stay tuned to find out! When it comes to reviewing products like a Penguin Lecture, it's a little more difficult to easily categorize things, and it often comes down to subjective opinions rather than cold, hard facts. I'll do my best to stick with the facts. I'll, of course, share my opinions as well, but only the facts will affect the final star rating.
Product Quality
If we're to look at production quality, all Penguin lectures (with rare exception) are shot, filmed, lit, and edited expertly and amazingly, so there's not much to review there. If you're looking for the over the top Bill Malone, he's (mostly) here, but toned down a bit. This is the most serious I've ever seen him, yet he's still hilarious (I know this is subjective).
The lecture was somewhat biographical and kind of a timeline of his life in magic. Because of this, he performed tricks that were of "that time in his life" so he was a bit out of practice on a few things. I've heard a few people complain about this, but it didn't personally bother me.
In most (if not all) cases, he re-did the trick, and you still got to see the full correct performance.
Having said that, he was also dealing with a bit of a cold that started really getting him toward the end. The cold combined with the less-current effects caused a few awkward moments, but again, it's such a small piece of the delicious pie that is Bill Malone.
Ad Copy Integrity
The ad copy? Well it talks about how amazing, sought-after, and well-known Bill Malone is. It reads more like a press kit than ad copy. Not much to review here. The ad trailer? Well now we've got something to review. The short answer is simply this. Watch the ad trailer. It is exactly what you will get plus a whole bunch more.
If you're interested in what was shown in the ad trailer, then you'll get what you're looking for. If you're not into cards, etc., then this is likely, not for you . . . except . . . it probably still is.
Malone spends (in multiple segments) easily over an hour giving excellent expert real-world advice that is invaluable for people who want to grow the business side of magic, and along for that ride comes advice on approaching people, properly presenting magic, etc.
Final Thoughts
If you're not kind enough to overlook a magician being human and making mistakes then you'll hate this lecture (and likely you're kind of a jerk). If you like Bill Malone, you'll love this lecture. If you want to see a couple of things that not many people know about, you'll love this lecture.
If you want some excellent advice, great stories, and 3 and half hours of entertainment, you'll love this lecture.
Final verdict: 5 stars with a Stone Status of GEM!
