STAR DRAWS

Jamie Williams; Matthew Wright

Marvelous-FX Ltd

(Based on 1 review)
Star Draws by Matthew Wright and Jamie Williams is a simple yet powerful close-up piece of magic and mentalism.

The spectator freely chooses any one of six crayons from a crayon pack and is then asked to think of something associated with that color. Using magicians stealth and the Jedi "force" the spectator chooses a character from Star Wars that corresponds to the chosen color of crayon.

Magically the crayon now transforms into the chosen character right in the spectators hands.

Comes with download instructions detailing everything you need to know plus multiple routines and ideas to help create your own presentation piece. Also included (for iPhone users only) IS EZ-4S, Matthew Wrights incredible system for forcing anything on your phone.

Very easy to do and suitable for all levels. plays as well for children as it does for adults.

Overview

There are a few presentations to this effect as demonstrated in 4 different videos on those sites selling this product. The basic effect is to first have your spectator select a movie (Star Wars) and then have them pick one of the six colored crayons from the box. You now place that crayon in their hand and have them close their hand around it. Have them think of a character in that movie that reminds them of their chosen color - one of the colors they randomly selected. When they open their hand, the profile of that specific character (Yoda, Storm Trooper, Darth Vader …) is now sculpted into the top of the crayon.

Effect

Star Draws can be performed as a mental effect as well as an illusion. After the spectator selects a movie and the color of a crayon, they are asked to think of a character in this movie that is relative to the color chosen. The end of the previously shown crayon is shown to have changed in the closed hand of the spectator into a sculpture of a character from the movie selected by them.

Method

The specially made crayons do all the work for you. Please note that even though the spectator can freely choose any color, there is a force that needs to be done to select the needed movie, Star Wars. In order to do the force you will have to either make some cards up in advance, the backs of your business card will work nicely or some index cards cut in half. The alternative will be to do the force with your phone but it will have to be an iPhone.

Product Quality

The crayons are very sturdy and will not break as they are made out of plastic rather than wax. In one of the gimmicked crayons I received, ‘something’ came loose but I was able to repair it with a little crazy glue and it will be fixed forever - no biggie. The crayon box is made of a standard thin cardboard stock. As you are opening and closing the box, putting the crayons in and taking them out, some natural wear and tear will take place not unlike the case for a deck of cards - beware. To help reinforce it, wrap some satin scotch around the opening of the box so that it will deter tearing to make it last longer. The downloadable video is 45 minutes long with tutorials from both Jamie and Matthew and Matthew showing/explaining his original performance of this effect which has been updated to the one you are purchasing. As an added bonus, you will receive Matthew Wright's EZ-4S an system for forcing anything on your phone (iPhone only). This instructional video is 32 minutes long.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad reads: "The spectator freely chooses any one of six crayons from a crayon pack and is then asked to think of something associated with that color. Using magicians stealth and the Jedi "force" the spectator chooses a character from Star Wars that corresponds to the chosen color of crayon. Magically the crayon now transforms into the chosen character right in the spectators hands.” After watching the demo and reading this description, I don’t feel that it is well described and is confusing .The color can be randomly selected but the movie has to be forced. You will be taught how to do this in the tutorials however this was never made clear in the ad. Yes, "the downloadable tutorial details everything you need to know plus multiple routines and ideas to help create your own presentations”. Some f you after purchasing this may feel at little misled as I was but it all works out after watching all the tutorials which I did find a little confusing at times.

Final Thoughts

In some of the ad videos that show Jamie ‘writing' with the crayon on a piece of card stock which will force the movie, this is something that you do not have to do. If you decide to do that, you will have to make your own force cards there is some DIY to be done. You will also have to ensure that no one is seated/standing beside or behind you. Even though I don’t have an iPhone and could not actually practice it, I can see how easy it is to do and how it is not limited to just this effect, you will find many other uses for this phone force. Due to the fact that 1. I did have to do some repair to one of my crayons, 2. there will be some major wear on the crayon box unless you fix it up as described above, and 3. the ad copy was a bit deceiving and not fully explicit as mentioned herein. I believe this is a good effect that is really different and entertaining I am deducting 2 stars for the reasons stated.

Suggestions

If you want to scuff up the crayon with some fine sandpaper to look a little more like wax you can but you do not need to. This is a good effect foe small parlor and close-up but definitely not strolling.
