I first bought the first three videos as VHS tapes when they first came out. I had just gotten home from a short trip fairly late at night, when I found that the package had arrived in the mail. My ex went straight to bed, but I made the mistake of thinking that I would pop the first video in the VCR and watch just the first trick or two, and then I'd go to bed. Several hours later I was still awake because I had to watch all three videos. I was exhausted the next day, and it was worth it. I still think these are the best card magic videos ever produced. The choice of material is simply stellar, Ammar's teaching is clear and meticulous, and the over-the-shoulder parts make everything much easier to learn.
Now, let's me mention a couple of personal highlights on Vol. 1:
8 Card Brainwave -- Daryl had an interesting version in one of his lecture notes, and David Williamson's presentation is probably the funniest for this trick. In my experience, it's a great lead-in to the next routine, Red Hot Mama, just the way it's performed on the video.
Red Hot Mama -- Simply a wonderful routine. Pop Haydn, Aaron Fisher, and others have interesting work on the plot as well.
Triumph -- Dai Vernon's fantastic routine from the Stars of Magic is taught here in detail. It's one of the best table card routines ever.
Further Than That -- This self-working routine by Stewart James generates laughter and gasps.
Cannibal Cards -- You learn the Ascanio Spread and a great routine to go along with it.
The Insurance Policy -- I realize a lot of magicians may think it's passe, but most laypeople have never seen it before. It's a card routine that you can do for over a thousand people. I know, because I've done it. (For those wondering how I do it for that many people, I use a fairly large policy so that the final revelation is quite visible from a distance. Once I force the card on the spectator, I have them show the card to the audience. I say that I don't think everyone can see the card, so I want them to say the name of the card to the audience while I plug my ears. They do so, and I pretend that I did not hear them say it. I always make a joke about people in the back not being able to hear them, and ask them to say it one more time a little louder. Since the spectator says the name of the card to the audience, people in the back know what it is even if it is too far away for them to be able to see it. When you open up the final fold of the policy to reveal the huge card, it usually gets a strong reaction from laypeople--gasps, exclamations of "whoa," and applause. Ammar's ending of giving the spectator a Hershey's kiss, if you use it, usually generates laughter and more applause.)
To finish this review, if you are into card magic and you don't have these DVDs, I don't think you should buy anything else until you get them, and I think you should get them ASAP. It might even be able to make a living just with the magic on these DVDs.
They are that good. They are the GOAT of card magic instructional videos.
