Depiction

(Based on 1 review)
Depiction is the perfect effect for any mentalist or magician to carry in their wallet or pocket! A compact Design Duplication routine (with nothing ever drawn!) on a single wallet card.

Images are used frequently in telepathy tests because they are easy to visualize and transmit. The Depiction card shows twenty-four, easy to recognize and easy to visualize items. A participant mentally selects one.

The performer explains that by forming a simple mental image, and visualizing it in a particular way, the likelihood of a successful test is increased.

After the participant is guided through a brief visualization process, the performer is able to name the exact item the participant selected! The following is true about Depiction:
  • No progressive anagrams
  • No force
  • Durable, 100% plastic card
  • Extremely deceptive
  • No language restrictions

Overview

“You’ve come a long way, baby” was a slogan used in 1968 by Phillip Morris to market a cigarette exclusively to women. That slogan which has lasted into modern times can aptly described the journey Mental Voyage by Paul Carnazzo has taken over the years since its inception. What started as a company with just a couple offerings marketing primarily to those interested in mentalism has grown to offer 44 different products reaching various segments of the magic community. Depiction is one of a series of releases that is considered “pocket mentalism”. These are items one can carry in a shirt pocket or wallet and will allow you to perform mind bending feats of mentalism. A single Depiction card offers the performer a great array of objects for the spectator to focus on and transmit telepathically to the performer. Why limit yourself to 5 ESP symbols when you can mystify your audience by offering 24 possible symbols instead?

Effect

The performer initiates a conversation about ESP and the possibility of transmitting from one person’s mind to another, a thought of image. He then displays a small card issued by The Institute of Parapsychology which features 24 easily recognized symbols. The images range from a simple paperclip to a microwave. The participant is asked to look at both sides of the card and think of one. They are then asked if their image is on one side of the card and then the other. The images are either depicted in gray or black and whatever color they are depicted in; they should think of the actual object in that color. With nary any information at all, the performer reveals the thought of image. Nothing has to be written down and the thought can be only in the participant’s mind.

Method

The method for Depiction is a clever combination of simple math and linguistic subtleties. The thought of image can easily be coaxed from the participant in a logical and justifiable procedure in which no “red flags” are raised. A simple statement is posed as a means to clarify the thought in their mind and with almost nothing being spoken you will know what image they are thinking of. Is this a self-working trick? No, but the procedure is well within the reach of anyone who has dabbled in mentalism for a while.

Product Quality

The card is very nicely produced on plastic stock. This is not laminated paper, so the card should last an eternity if taken care of. This and other releases in his “Institute of Parapsychology” series are larger than a credit card height wise, but will fit width wise in a credit card slot of a wallet. The stock is thinner than a credit card so several in this series can fit in one credit card slot. The instructions are clear weighing in at 11 pages with 7 images and includes a basic script. The entire procedure is spelled out with an alternate handling to eliminate the math altogether.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate as it is in all the Mental Voyage releases.

Final Thoughts

This is one of many releases by Mental Voyage that you can easily carry with you in your shirt pocket or wallet. With products such as this, you can easily replicate and surpass electronic versions which are not only expensive, prone to fail but also limit the participant’s choice to just a few as well.
