The Ron Bauer Private Studies monographs are more than "just tricks". Each contains one completely worked out and tested magical exercise that teaches you how to use Direction and Misdirection. Direction is about Narrative and the thread of Unity that holds it together. Misdirection is about Hiding Secrets Out in the Open. In other words, you not only learn a trick, but what to say and when to say it, how to do what must be done, and why to do it that way. Most important, every monograph includes valuable insights that you can apply to your magic whether you're a professional or just like to entertain friends and associates.

"From the man who has left his ring in more than three hundred restrooms." This is a thoroughly baffling approach to the Ring Off Wand classic that doesn't require a wand. Twice, the performer's ring suddenly vanishes, then reappears on his finger. (Bauer's performance of this trick took in Vernon, despite the fact that he published the inspiration for it in Stars of Magic.). Learn the subtle secret of using one method to throw the audience off the scent of the next.

I recently pulled this manuscript out again from my collection, as it deals with a bare minimum of props. I appreciate being able to do 'strange things' with simple ungaffed objects-along with other props that have been made 'special'. As with all Ron Bauer's scripts in this series, every angle, and nuance is looked at. The premise for this, and other tricks, does indeed lift it from trick, to flushed out story. Bauer has worked this effect for decades, so, the routine has many valuable insights-despite the fact that it only takes a few minutes to perform. It is also helpful to look at Vernon's version of the trick in Stars of Magic, as well as the handling described in the Sachs book. Bauer has eliminated a 'move' that was always suspicious, and shifts the effect to emphasize the ring ALWAYS returning to the magician's finger ( as opposed to the novelty /challenge of 'is it on or off the wand?') This I think is a worthwhile effect to learn and perform, as you wear one of the props, and can carry or borrow the other. The only thing I don't completely take from Bauer's scripts are the puns and jokes-I use humor, but not to the point of such extreme absurdity. It was the same with "Don Alan's Chop Cup Routine', and probably the rest of the series. Jokes and puns aside, a worthwhile purchase. To REALLY take this effect/premise further though, I think Greg Wilson has more flushed out routines, as does Gary Ouellet.
