Transcendence is a single packet trick marketed by Alakazam Magic and created by Peter Pellikaan. It is an extremely visual transformation of 4 spot cards into 4 court cards in a matter of seconds…and then the trick is over. This trick is being sold for $25, which as explained below is a bit pricey for what you get.

With Transcendence you get a 30 minute DVD, the needed special Phoenix backed playing cards, a plastic card carrying case and a bit of something you will need to set up your cards. The DVD has three main sections; Performance, Explanation and Toolbox. The performance is a 27 second video with Pellikan performing his packet trick to two spectators as they are seated at a close-up table. The trick, as performed by Pellikaan is a beautiful thing to watch. The Explanation section of the trick is taught by Alakazam’s David Loosley and Pellikaan in about 10 minutes.

The Explanation section of the DVD is not Alakazam’s best work because Pellikaan, who is from the Netherlands, is not a great instructor and he is a bit quirky. While this characteristic may make his performances memorable, Pellikkaan should stick to performing and creating where his talents lie. Loosley seems to struggle a bit to get Pellikaan to explain the handling and method and at times seems to be laughing at the situation. When Pellikaan does go through the explanations, they are very fast and Loosley has him repeat it several times. He probably should have taken the lead in the instruction or done it with Peter Nardi. Also missing was a performer’s point of view camera, which would have made the instruction easier to follow. There will be a one-time set up that will use the material provided and it takes about a minute. You may have to refresh the process after many performance…not a big deal. The production quality of the DVD is excellent.

Although the cards are “special” cards, you are taught how to perform the trick with your regular cards as well. In fact, Peter Nardi explains that after Alakazam filmed the product video, he thought of using the special Phoenix backed cards and then included them with your purchase.

The final section, the Toolbox, teaches various counts such as the Elmsley, OPEC, Roumba, cut and others. Although they are not all needed for Transcendence, it is a bonus. Toolbox is the largest part of the DVD at 22 minutes.

The trick is not a beginner trick and will require some practice to get the counts and handling down so they appear very smooth to your spectators. You cannot hand out the special cards that come with the trick and you need to make sure you are performing on a close up mat or the cards may not drop and remain how they need to, to avoid detection of the method. Because the trick is over as quickly as it is done, you will need to be ready to scoop up the cards and move onto another trick so that your spectators do not reach for the cards, which is the natural reaction after seeing a truly amazing looking effect. Based upon the aforementioned limitations, I think this trick is not very well suited for strolling and is killer for social media. The trick resets very quickly and there are no angles to be concerned about.

There is nothing misleading about the ad copy of the promotional video, but it may cost more than I would expect for a single packet trick.

Based upon the foregoing limitations, I would recommend this trick to anyone wanting to post something amazing on social media or someone that is in love with superfast packet tricks.
