“My Silly Tricks” is a DVD offering ten effects from the working repertoire of 2015 FISM Grand Prix winner, Hector Mancha. There is a wide variety of material taught, from close up to stage, all of which comes from a unique, interesting and intriguing point of view and approach to magic.

The magic taught on the DVD is strong, but even better, the themes, props and ideas are distinct and individual. Mr. Mancha uses a ukulele to produce a card, “breaks the ice” by producing a hammer and ice, does a close up version of the Water Torture Cell, and has a lovely approach to the classic Snowstorm in China. Mr. Mancha’s character and persona are likeable and entertaining, and should provide inspiration not to imitate, but to find one’s own unique and interesting way of sharing one’s magic.

However, it’s not just the quality of effects that make this a good resource. Mr. Mancha’s methods are also clever, deceptive and effective. He has some excellent, thoughtful subtleties, comes up with unusual solutions to common problems, and takes an approach to solving classic magic plots that uses some very outside the box thinking.

Mr. Mancha has clearly thought a great deal about his material, not just in construction of method, but also in how effective it can be in performance. Among other topics, he discusses the importance of subverting audience expectations, how to open a show, and talks about magic as a personal expression, not for the sake of being different, but as a way to illustrate how one is different from everyone else.

“My Silly Tricks” contains great methods and effects that will definitely set you apart from other performers. However, the real opportunity is to see how one magician has created unique effects that showcase a consistent and interesting persona, and to use this as inspiration in your own shows. Whether you utilize the excellent material or not, there is much to learn from this DVD.
