Mark Elsdon's BUT NOT HERE is an amazing effect that wows lay audiences and fools the pants off magicians. It's clean, direct, and very strong. Best of all, it's easy to do and can be mastered by magicians of any skill level.
Remember these important points:
- The spectator mentally selects a card - and they can change their mind as much as they wish!
- The prediction can be customized to include the specific event or occasion you are performing at!
- Ultra easy to do, uses no sleight of hand or complicated moves.
- Fast reset makes it great for restaurant workers, strolling magicians, and more.

I like this one. It is strong, it is easy to do, the revelations/predictions can be customized to mention specific clientele or specific details about your clients and best of all, it is memorable.
I have only recently picked this effect up and was already familiar with its working, so I was able to put it into one of my close-up sets. This effect is very easy to do once you understand how it works.
In my personal opinion, the deck itself is not heavily gaffed. In fact, only a small portion is. If you were really motivated for some reason to figure out a way, you could easily derive a way to remove a few cards (about 18 cards or so) from a normal deck, secretly add the necessary pre-set cards and go on with this effect. Not necessary at all and again in my opinion, not really worth the trouble, but it can still be done if desired.
The principle that is used to remember what predictions are associated with what outcome is known by most magicians. In case it is not, Paul explains everything very clearly on the accompanying DVD. He also gives you a few bonus ideas and tips on handling.
Another point that is not mentioned is that once you prepare the deck the first time, you never have to do it again if you do not customize the predictions or until the Post-Its wear out. The reset is indeed quick and easy; I would estimate that it takes less than 5 seconds.
The accompanying DVD is relatively short but it is sufficient and Paul Richards (owner of Elmwood Magic) does an excellent job as usual in giving clear instructions and other hints, tips and ideas. It is well produced with crisp, studio-quality audio and video.
Although the extras section has nothing to do with the effect, you can watch demo videos for some of the other excellent products offered by Elmwood Magic.
If you are looking for a fun, clean and direct piece of magic, you will get a lot of mileage out of this one!
