Do I really need to review this? Come on... just look at the lineup. 16 hours of material (not 16 minutes like several DVDs that have hit the market recently).

Yes, it's $150 for the set, but how much did you spend on your last magic convention? Don't forget the airfare, hotel and food. And I'm guessing the lineup might have had two or three people of the caliber at EMC.

It's even difficult to write about the "highlights" on these DVDs because everything is a highlight. Here are some of my personal favorites:

Talks

  • Eric Mead - Mapping the impossible, an exploration of theatrical impossibilities through personal stories (presented on Eric's birthday)
  • Rudy Coby – How to be the coolest magician on earth
  • Apollo Robbins – Manage the attention of your audience
  • Stan Allen – A few more things to think about
  • Dani DaOrtiz – Creating your audience
  • Gaetan Bloom – Undercover thread work
  • Rene Lavand teaching his oil and water routine
  • Max Maven's "straight line theory"

Performances

  • Lu Chen shows us how to present ACAAN as a theatrical performance piece(Asi Wind is the only other person I've seen make this play for a large, non-magician audience)
  • Lennart Green doing a piece of story magic based on Druid lore
  • Mike Caveney performing the Million Dollar Mystery (with an explanation in another session)
  • Gaetan Bloom doing... crazy Gaetan Bloom things
  • Marco Tempest with his insanely cool interactive iPhone magic
  • Christian Engblom's amazing cards to pocket
  • Max Maven working over the Buck twins

I suppose I should try to find some constructive criticism to offer. Actually I do have some. I think the one downfall to these sorts of online events is that the "audience" is barely present. There are only a couple dozen people in the room and they're all magicians of the highest caliber who have probably already seen everything that the presenters and performers are going to show or talk about. What's worse is that half of them appear to be more involved in the online chat than in giving their attention to the person on stage. It's about as unresponsive of an audience as you could find. Most performers need a "live" audience to function at their best and I feel that's the only thing missing from the EMC presentations.
