This DVD was not at all what I expected. I went into it expecting to see an 'Art of Card Manipulation' type of progression from basic card manipulation moves and working your way up to more advanced work, all encompassing traditional manipulation work.

It was anything but traditional! You have a choice on the menu of watching it in Chinese, English or Japanese. The menu is very easy to use but there is no play all button and normally that would annoy me, but in this case I think it is a good idea. For one thing, because of the nature of what you are (presumably) watching to learn, it keeps the pace slow and steady - you watch one chapter and absorb it rather than being immediately bombarded with the material in the next chapter.

You have two trailers you can watch, there is a section that talks about what types and brands of cards to use and another section about how to set up your decks for manipulation. I used to do card manipulation in my full evening shows and I wish someone had though of this preparation years ago - fantastic and ingenious idea! Peter Marvey did something similar with his brand of manipulation cards but on a different part of the card.

Next you will find that there are three sections labeled 'Beginner', 'Intermediate' and 'Advanced' Card Moves. Each section has four chapters. In the beginner section he explains the true basics of card manipulation - Cardini-style single card vanishes and productions as well as fan productions. In the intermediate section he starts to show variations on popular manipulations - ones that are use by the top manipulators in their shows. In the advanced section he continues this trend and even teaches some of his own original additions to some of the earlier sequences.

There is a video of a sample routine using everything that was taught, starting with the beginner section all the way through the advanced section. That would be a good end, but it was not!

The next section shows you exactly how he performed the entire routine in the sample video - and more than once because each time it is from a different angle. Fantastic thinking!

The ad copy is 100% accurate and the production quality is fantastic! If you watch the credit section (where it says 'About the Team' in the menu) you will recognize some heavy hitters from the Asian magic community that were involved with the production of this video.

The teaching is all non-verbal with detailed text instructions at the bottom of the screen. The text is left on long enough and the sequence it is describing is performed over enough times in a single shot that it is easy to read the text, the watch how it is being done and follow along yourself. I think Jeff Stone would appreciate the text-over instructions in this case!

Also throughout the entire explanation for each and every move, except during the explanation for the sample routine, the explanations are done in front of a mirror. This was a great idea because you not only see exactly what an audience would by looking at the mirror, but also what the magician sees from behind. In certain cases where necessary, Lee Ang turned his hands to a different orientation to help clarify the move.

If you have already studied videos like the aforementioned 'Art of Card Manipulation' Volumes 1-3 by Jeff McBride and you have practiced the material from there, then this video will be suitable for you. If not, study the McBride videos and practice that material for a while first.

As far as crediting for moves go - it was very good and all credits were given at the beginning of each chapter and it also explains the evolution of any variations, prior to any instruction.

Having had a lot of experience with card manipulation myself I had no trouble following along and actually accomplishing most of the material on here, but to do it as well as Lee Ang does it and to do it as smoothly, it will take plenty of practice.

Before I start to ramble, the bottom line is that if you have some card manipulation experience behind you, I think the material here is well within your grasp and you will get plenty of great instruction and sequences from this video to keep you busy for a while.

Very highly recommended!
