Hook

Mayne, Andrew

Andrew Mayne

(Based on 1 review)
Andrew Mayne presents an evil twist on a classic shock magic effect:

Phase 1: Demonstrate your ability to control pain by piercing a fish hook through your skin.

Phase 2: Display your uncanny ability to control your blood flow by moving the hook around without a single drop of blood.

Phase 3: Rip the fish hook from you flesh and appear to heal instantaneously in a supernatural manner.

...All of this takes place while the spectator holds on to one end of the hook.

Hook is Andrew Mayne's devious update to the classic needle through arm effect. Shove an unprepared fish hook through your arm while a spectator holds on to one end of it at all time. For a disturbing finale, you rip the fish hook straight out of your arm completely unharmed.

Includes step-by-step instructions and special handling instructions.

Running Time Approximately: 30 mins

Traditionally, I’m against trying to ‘improve’ or ‘update’ a classic effect. Typically, a new version of the effect looks like a handling the creator rejected while working on the original version. This product by Andrew Mayne is a rare exception. It’s not better or worse than the original, it’s just different. This version of needle through arm is a variation that is easy to make yourself, and does not require you to buy a gimmick from a magic shop, or buy stage blood.

While some may feel the lack of blood undercuts this version, it is addressed in the presentation, and there are several moments in this version that others do not have. For example, the hook that pierces your arm is attached to a fishing line, which the spectator is holding the entire time. They can tug the line, and see the hook pull your wounded flesh. You also begin the effect with having the spectator put on rubber gloves, and examining the hook. Finally, the effect ends with the spectator ripping the hook out of your flesh, and you instantly heal. That’s pretty different compared to the standard needle through arm.

You will want to be careful who to perform this for. This is not for a kid’s birthday party, obviously. This is for where the audience is composed of teens or adults, who are expecting something weird, and won’t hate you for showing them something gross. A Halloween show seems perfect for this effect.

Also, I should point out that this is a practical effect, and Mayne shows you how you can add this to ANY point in your show. No need to be worried about being ‘set up’ the entire time leading up to it.

The DVD is well shot, well edited, well produced, and well packaged. The text tends to go off screen, but it doesn’t make it impossible to learn.

If you like geek style magic, and want a gross effect that packs small, plays big, and looks like a miracle, you should definitely look into Hook.
