I fully understand the need to make a piece of magic your own, especially when the existing method or routine doesn't fit your personality. It's exactly this type of quest that lead to "Accentuate the Positive," my version of Max Maven's "Positive Negative" (published in The Mystery School Book and Video Mind, respectively).
In the case of Bang On, Marc Oberon offers us his version of Kenton Knepper's Kolossal Killer.
For those not familiar with Kenton's original, it was created mainly as an "out". The idea is that you can produce any chosen card from your wallet. Kenton's version uses a single wallet, a few cards, and some clever psychology. It's the psychology part that disagrees with some people. Personally, I think it adds an interesting beat to the revelation. Plus, keep in mind that "Killer" was created as an out.
Bang On gets around the psychology by doubling the number of cards and quadrupling the number of wallets. What do you get with this extra bulk? Well, you can produce any card called for... without the need for a psychological ruse.
To my mind, what's really happened here is that Marc has taken what was originally an out and turned it into an effect. With this version you can really have someone name any card in the deck and you produce it from your wallet.
I really didn't have much interest in doing such a thing until presented with a nice routine premise on the DVD. In the routine, you offer a prize of a bottle of vodka for anyone that can name the one card you've stashed in your wallet. Not only does someone get the card, but you then produce a one-shot bottle of vodka from the envelope that contained the card. Cool...
The quality of the props is excellent. The wallets are well-made and embossed to make the "work" a bit easier for you. The envelopes are custom-cut to exact measurements. However, you will need to assemble the envelopes, so have a glue stick ready.
The cards that are supplied with the effect do not have standard U.S. Playing Card faces. If that matters to you, you'll be able to get replacements from your local magic dealer.
There was one major mistake on the DVD. Marc begins by giving credit to Larry Becker for the original Kolossal Killer. He realized the mistake after the DVDs had been produced and opted to include a slip of paper with the correct credit in the box. Kudos for getting it right, even if it required an addendum.
