"A close friend and confidant of some of magic’s greatest luminaries, Romaine was part of a core group of magicians who excelled internationally in the fifties, sixties and seventies, plying their trade on various fronts, from nightclubs to theaters, from military tours to art centers, in addition to multiple appearances on local and national television."
I wrote these introductory remarks for an article on Romaine that will appear in a forthcoming issue of Genii, and the great luminaries I was referring to include Frank Garcia, Jimmy Ray and Slydini.
Unlike his more celebrated peers, however, Romaine never published extensively, though a handful of his sleights and routines have appeared in various books and periodicals. Thus, for the most part, he enjoys a largely underground reputation, bolstered by the admiration of some of the greatest manipulators of our time. Indeed, at the Canadian Association of Magicians convention last year, Romaine introduced Jeff McBride at his lecture, and as he was doing this, Jeff got down on his knees and said, "My guru! My guru!"
Now, at the age of seventy, he has decided to tip his mitt on a two-volume DVD set that details the inner workings of the wonderful manipulation act with which he earned his living for decades. And contrary to what you might think, his chops are still fully intact, as he continues to perform every month and (perhaps more impressively) rehearse every day!
Both DVDs begin with Romaine performing his legendary drunk act on stage. The act is then broken down into its two main components -- cards and billiard balls.
DVD One deals entirely with Romaine’s card manipulation, a collection of moves and techniques that have been culled from so many different sources that even experts will likely discover something they haven’t seen before, not to mention a subtlety or two that Romaine has developed over fifty years of performing the act.
Similarly, DVD Two details Romaine’s Billiard Ball manipulation, a wonderful ensemble of sleights and sequences that, again, while not all original to Romaine, come together in a way that makes the routine unique as a whole.
In addition, DVD Two features some bonus material, including a few basic cigarette moves, a section of valuable "worker" oriented advice, and a performance and explanation of his close-up masterpiece, "The Perplexing Persian Pearls," an exceptional three-ball routine that was originally published in Real Secrets of the Three Ball Routines (Garcia, 1978).
Romaine: The Monarch of Manipulators is not just a lecture DVD, it’s a man’s life work, and it’s well worth your attention if you perform or are planning to perform any kind of manipulation.
