Put the black box in the red box. Then put the red box in the black box!

The Empire In and Out Boxes are a miniature version of the Gozinta boxes. You begin by opening a small black box and showing a red box inside. Then you take out the red box, open it, and put the black box inside it. "Lubor's Gift" is a larger version of the same trick.

I bought the In and Out Boxes because I thought they might be good for close-up. They aren’t. In my experience they just aren’t very deceptive. The first person I showed the trick instantly recognized how it worked. Part of the problem may be that the dimensions of the In and Out boxes are a little "off". Gozinta boxes are supposed to look cube-shaped, but these boxes don’t: A spectator can instantly see that their width is considerably longer than the other two dimensions. Furthermore, size may matter. When one Gozinta box is put inside the other, the lid of the outer box doesn't completely close. With larger Gozinta boxes, the lid *almost* closes, and the illusion of one box fitting inside the other seems to work. With these small In and Out boxes, however, the lid closes only two-thirds of the way, and so it's glaringly obvious that one box doesn’t really fit inside the other.
