What you are getting is expert tuition from Daryl. If you do not know who Daryl is, he is one of the most respected and in-demand performers and lecturers anywhere in the world, and for good reason!
This DVD is for those who have never done magic before and want something easy (SUPER easy) to get started with. On the entire DVD there is only one sleight used and even that one is not necessary for the main effect in which it is used. The effects on here are all great for beginners and for that skill level, they are strong effects - all of them stemming from what magicians consider to be classic magic effects.
The contents include:

Cups and Balls
Cups and Balls Revealed
Cups and Balls Bonus Tip
The Ring Escape
The Ring Escape Revealed
Ritual Card Trick

Sponge Balls

Everything is very clearly explained and the production value is stellar - great lighting, easy to follow, easy to hear and understand. The ad copy is dead on and the menu is easy to navigate - you can play all at once or you can choose which chapters you want to view. The price point is a huge bonus too - you get more than your $10/USD worth here.
I just want to quickly point out that the "Ritual Card Trick" is very good and even seasoned professionals use that from time to time. Daryl gives some very good (and ingenious!) alternative uses for it that I never thought of, as he does for all of the other effects.
Especially considering that this DVD is aimed for complete beginners, I appreciate the short (yet thorough) length of the DVD and its contents (it runs just about 32 minutes). There is plenty on here for one to get started without the information overload that many of these types of beginner instruction DVDs suffer from.
Whether you are younger or older, if you have never done magic in your life and would like to get started, this DVD is one of the best places to start! Normally I recommend books, but this is just that good.
VERY highly recommended for complete beginners!

I could just simply give you five words that should make you go purchase this:
Less than ten bucks, Daryl.
But if those five words aren't enough . . . how 'bout this:
I really like what this series is attempting to do. Murphy's Magic and Daryl are trying to reconnect us to our roots. Get back to the basics . . . the elegant simplicity of wonder and of magic. This particular DVD is certainly very much geared for the beginner more so than any of the other Essentials in Magic DVDs I've reviewed.
However, working pros, I think you should spend the ten bucks just to support the mission of this project. If you have children, friends, family, etc. who are just starting out in magic, this DVD is PERFECT!
It teaches a very simple cups and balls routine with paper cups and paper balls, a super easy ring and rope trick, a very good self working card trick and more. Throughout the DVD, there are various plugs for other DVDs in the collection. You're given several simple handlings for classics in magic, with an invitation to take things further by checking out the other DVDs in this series.
For a beginner, those DVDs and this one in particular are an absolute MUST. All you working pros . . . particularly those over 40, you should get this DVD just for the trip down memory lane. You'll remember your first childhood interest in magic while you watch this, and it will inspire you to teach a new generation PROPERLY.
Final Verdict:
4.5 Stars with a Stone Status of GEM.
