Red Mirror is a look inside the mind of a world-class performer and FISM champion who many consider the most important magician of his generation.

Helder Guimarães is a studied practitioner of both magic and theatre with an experienced understanding of the arts. Offered on this volume is a collection of ten original card routines, but more importantly, his creative process and thinking behind each.

Featured is Helder's signature card act, a formal routine developed and refined through years of performing. This act includes the following routines:

4 For Four
Helder Skelter

Cardesian Coordinate

Over 3.5 hours featuring a live performance at The Magic Castle, an interview, studio performances and explanations shot with multiple HD cameras for superior picture quality and coverage, effect commentary, bad English and more!

Each routine has been broken down into its own segment and includes a separate studio performance and explanation. Helder then provides commentary after each effect, in which he discusses its development and offers ideas for you to take it further.

“The routines performed and explained belong to Helder Guimaraes. They are from his working repertoire and are offered for study purposes only. It is Helder’s wish that you take inspiration from these ideas and create your own routines rather than just perform them as is.”

These are the words that open these DVDs. Some have complained that this is telling us we can’t use the material we paid for. I feel this is simply a call to action to put work into your magic, and not just use the effects as we saw them. While I feel it could have been worded a bit differently, I found it inspiring to see a DVD that wasn’t encouraging us to copy the performer and his work. With that out of the way, let’s continue with the rest of the review…

This DVD is simply fantastic. Helder is definitely the new face of card magic. His style is engaging and casual, his magic is strong, and his methods are devious. His way of thinking kind of reminds me of Tommy Wonder, in that everything looks so clean to the point of near perfection.

Helder shows us his killer card to wallet closer, where he reaches in his back pocket with his EMPTY hand, and removes four signed cards. I watched this effect three times trying to catch the method, and I still had to watch the explanation. I was floored. While it may be ‘unpractical’ for the table hopper, it was an education to watch and learn.

Helder understands structure. He knows how to pull focus, how to use the end of one effect to set up for the next one. His performance was completely original, but if I had to describe it, I’d say it was like a blend of Juan Tamariz, Tommy Wonder, and Lee Asher.

There are also sections of Helder’s lecture included, as well as a section that discusses theory, creativity, and theater. This is where the real gold is. A world class professional showing his true love for the art and sharing it with us.

The DVD is beautifully shot and packaged. Dan and Dave Buck have continued to be devoted to products that are beautiful inside and out.

It does not matter whether you’re a card magic fan or not, you will learn from this DVD.
