I’m reviewing Volumes 4, 5 and 6 of the Daniel Garcia Project and there are three generic statements I should make about all three (apologies for the repetition if you read all three reviews).

The first is that I think there’s something for everyone on each of these DVDs. In fact, I tended to like the mythologically simpler routines the best!

The second is that, while there’s something for everyone, the bulk of the material is going to require some skill with cards or coins (or both). If that’s your thing, you’re going to have a lot to choose from. If not, I would argue that the few non-techie pieces are worth the price of the DVD.

The third is my one and only frustration with these DVDs. There’s a timer / scrub bar that runs during most of the video segments. I honestly don’t know why it’s there. I can see where I am in the video using my DVD or computer video player… and it’s distracting and even visually in the way of the material at times.

Now on to the effects…

Visa is easily my favorite effect on this DVD. That’s partially a personal thing because I’m drawn to “magnetic” premises. But it’s also just a really cool, impromptu bit of weirdness that uses borrowed objects… and makes sense (well, sort-of, the magnetic strips on credit cards aren’t actually magnetic; but close enough for an engaging premise).

Pop is not original in method, but it’s a really strong effect (and method). Daniel has added some simple, but very effective touches.

If you love sandwich routines (of the card variety), you’ll find several really good effects here. One is done in a participant’s hands. Another has a very interesting premise (magnetism, again).

On the Rocks is a simple coin through glass but the method is almost impossibly devious. You just have to try it to prove to yourself that it works and looks as good as it does.

If you like effects with non-standard magic props, check out Trick Tac. It even has a realistic premise that could lead you to some really interesting presentational angles. I’m definitely going to make one up.

iATM is yet another in the series of iPhone tricks. Like I’ve said before, it may need a bit of additional messing around to make work with modern phones, but it’s still totally viable. And this one uses money, which makes a lot more sense to me. NOW I’ll take the time to get it working so it’s on hand when an appropriate time arises.
