Overview

Jenzo by Simon Craze is an offbeat effect that doesn’t seem like magic but has magical properties to it. For me, it is reminiscent of the type of effects Robert Neale used to create. Exploiting the properties of illusion, line and story, the performer take the participant on a journey of creativity and imagination only to slowly engage them and have them join in on that journey.

Effect

The performer removes four tiles from a small leather case. On each tile there are lines etched on both sides which doesn’t seem to have any meaning or purpose. The etchings appear more to be like hieroglyphics that anything recognizable. The performer then starts to move the tiles around and shapes appear as they are assembled. First the four suits are created, a diamond, a heart, a spade and a club. Then, with further rearranging a queen appears, followed by a jack and then a king. Very intriguing and hypnotic. He then asks the spectators to choose a card from a shuffled deck and keep that card aside. Slowly and methodically the performer rearranges the tiles again and their thought of card appears.

Method

The method requires no sleight of hand and one only has to memorize the sequence of moves to create the shapes. The tiles are cleverly designed to produce very convincing images of the fore mentioned shapes and a couple more. The card(s) are forced and there are four reveals that can be made using the tiles. Three are card forces and one uses to famous TOXIC force.

Product Quality

The tiles are well made and come in a small leatherette case for travel. The downloadable instructions are fairly well done and teach the appropriate moves at a comfortable pace. The video is 28 minutes long and does repeat “real world” performances a bit too many times. This is a unique form of “magic” and probably would require the performer to enhance the performance with some story telling skills. If done without some showmanship, it may drag on a bit.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is nebulous. Although it is somewhat accurate, the wording in the ad copy “Can Jenzo really predict any card and any number?”…. may give one the impression that any card and number can be formed with the tiles and that it not true. Only two card reveals can be done, one gag reveal and one number reveal using the TOXIC force plus the other images mentioned before.

Final Thoughts

Jenzo is an interesting plot if you wanted to occupy the time at a dinner table. It is not amazing magic but it can be a curiosity if presented well.
