Double Crossed

Daryl

Fooler Doolers

(Based on 1 review)

This is the cleanest and most baffling version of the cards across effect EVER! Twenty cards, which a spectator counts from a shuffled deck, are divided into two groups. Two freely THOUGHT OF cards magically vanish from one pile and appear in the other while both packets of cards are held securely between the hands of two spectators. It's simple, direct, and stunning! Easy to do and instantly reset.

Includes an instructional DVD featuring live and studio performances by Daryl - The Magician's Magician.

There's one thing that can certainly be said of Daryl: he understands packaging!

I wrote in a recent review that I am not a connoisseur of the 3-Fly effect. However, I am partial to the cards across plot. I've seen and performed a number of versions, both using fekes and using normal cards.

Let me state my opinion of what makes a good cards across routine.
  • It must be clean. If the effect requires any sleight of hand, the performer must cover the moments during which they happen. (Notice I say cover the "moment", not the move. There should be no hint that anything out of the ordinary has happened).
  • The cards should be in your volunteer's hands as much as possible. The more they can do the counting and display, the better.
  • The packet that cards will travel from should be verified to have the initial number of cards right before the "flight".
  • While not strictly necessary, I'm partial to having one or more of the "traveling" cards be chosen by the volunteers before hand. In a perfect world, these cards are not revealed until after the cards have made their journey.

Daryl's "Double Crossed" meets all of my requirements for a great routine. Since the effect relies mostly on fekes, all of the displays seem completely fair. There is only one "move" and it's completely covered in the natural action of counting the cards. With the exception of this one count, the volunteers do the rest of the counting. The "counting" of the initial packet is done in the natural process of having the cards mentally selected. The performer doesn't appear to be proving anything by having them counted. And, yes, two cards are thought of and not revealed until the very end.

As with most good cards-across routines, it can be performed for an audience of two or two thousand. If the plot interests you, be sure to check out Daryl's version.
