Next you push the eight solid spikes through the box penetrating the coin! When you take the spikes out of the box and open the lid you see the coin is 100% unharmed! Very easy to perform!

Overview

Yes, again I recall playing with a cheap magic kit version of Spiker. Murphy's has brought it back in their Apprentice Line of tricks and this is great for a brand new magician. Using the patter that the trick is like a woman in a box with swords going through it, the imagery is great and its super easy to perform.

You are provided with a casket, 8 plastic spikes and a plastic coin, which can be replaced with an American half dollar.

Effect

A coin is placed in a round casket with holes in the lid and holes in the bottom. Once closed, 8 spikes are placed through the holes, apparently through the coin and out the bottom of the casket. The illusion of penetration is so fun.

Method

The method is so obvious once you know it, but it will baffle all kids and even many adults (most actually). The trick is pretty much self-working once you follow the basic steps and you will be performing this in 10 seconds after watching the 5 minutes instructional video.

Product Quality

The product is plastic and not the best qulaity in the world, but better than magic kit versions. Javier Fuenmayor teaches the 5 minute instructional video and performance and adds excitement to this beginner trick.

Final Thoughts

I like this one for young kids, but it will probably be discarded once your young magi learns a few more tricks. A great place to start!

Overview

If you are not careful, you may get stuck on performing Spiker Box. Spiker Box by Apprentice Magic is another of one of their releases geared for the beginning magician. All the tricks in this series are simple, classic magic tricks that many experienced magicians have long been acquainted with. Once manufactured in brass and exotic woods, these classics are more seen nowadays in the plastic versions like the one offered here. Despite the materials the trick is made of, the effect is the same. And the effect relies more on the presentation than the object, and that’s where the magic lies.

Effect

The performer reminisces about one of his favorite stage illusions which was the sword basket he had seen when he was a child. He would like to recreate that moment for his spectators now but of course in miniature. He takes out a small round box with holes in the lid and some spikes. Inside the cylindrical box is a coin. It is solid, as is the box and the spikes. The coin goes in the box, the lid replaced and he proceeds to drive the spikes thru the coin, not once but eight times. Surely the coin must have holes in it! The spikes are removed, the lid opened and the coin is whole.

Method

Naturally the prop does all the work for you, which leaves you nothing but to focus on the delivery. Unless you know the secret behind the method, it is extremely hard to re-engineer. The illusion is based on a clever use of physics. Don’t be fooled by the low cost of this product, it works just as good as the ones made out of more expensive materials.

Product Quality

The props are made of plastic but that shouldn’t deter someone from giving this a go. The “trick” is the ability to weave a good tale. In other cheap versions of this trick you would probably get typed instructions on a miniscule piece of paper that you may be able to understand. With The Spiker Box you will not only get the props but a downloadable video instruction featuring Javier Fuenmayor, Murphy’s Magic new spokesperson. Javier brings this trick to a new level. Ever excited and well spoken, Javier teaches you the routine and a premise to hang it on. Filmed on a beautiful set in High Definition, Javier brings what is needed most in magic; enthusiasm. This is well worth the purchase just to watch Javier.
