Overview

Regardless of the type of magic you like to perform, you have to admit that playing cards are the most versatile. The performance can be a gambling demonstration, a scary presentation, a romantic story or a funny story. Many of those depend on the ability and skill of the performer. Bite Me by Paul Gertner is such a unique and interesting premise, that the actual presentation and setup of the trick is not only engaging and bizarre that regardless of the performer’s personality the trick is so captivating that it practically carries the weight of the presentation on its own. This will be a trick they will talk about for the rest of their lives.

Effect

The performer has a card chosen from a deck, signed and placed back into the deck. He proceeds to talk about the liability of doing card tricks and to prove it, he produces a guarantee joker that has a disclaimer on it stating that cards should not be eaten. “Imagine that, someone actually ate a deck of cards. Who would do that?” Looking somewhat intrigued he decides to take a bite out of the deck. Whilst chewing the eaten cards he explains he didn’t eat them all, there is one left and pushes the single piece out of his mouth with a signature on it. Clenched in his teeth he pushes the piece from his mouth back onto the card it came from. Pulling a reassembled card from the deck, it is non-other that the spectators signed card. Amazing…..

Method

The method relies on a gimmicked deck, a special card with the disclaimer on it and some intermediate card handling skills. There is not a lot to the trick and the story preceding the trick almost everyone can relate to. There are minimal sleights involved but angles are to be taken into consideration because of the nature of the deck.

Product Quality

The cards provided are Bicycle playing cards so there are no quality issues there. Included with the set I got was a DVD and a pamphlet of written instructions with accompanying photos. The DVD is about 50 minutes long all totaled and within is the origin of the trick, similar tricks, a performance, an explanation as to how Gertner does it and a simpler handling. Finishing it up are a few extra tips. The quality of the instruction is excellent. All the moves are explained and the pace of the instructional is very good and easy to follow. The written instructions are on par with the DVD.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate and if performed this will be a memorable trick to say the least. I am not one for comedy magic and this trick is one that I would perform.

A magician taking a big nasty bite out of a deck of cards . . . quick . . . who comes to mind when I say that? My guess is that Paul Gertner was not even in the top 100.

Here's the basic effect:

  • Card selected and signed

  • "Shuffled" into the deck and "lost"

  • Magician takes a big bite out of the deck

  • Swallows the pieces - except for a portion of the spectator's card

  • Partial signature is seen on the "bit off" portion in the magician's mouth

  • Re-attached spectator's bitten card to the piece in mouth

  • Deck is completely bitten through and examine-able

  • Spectator is left with a signed card with your dental impressions as a souvenir

If you like the effect . . . then get this for sure. In my review of Stephen Tucker's This, That and The Other I mentioned that for $35 bucks you get a short poorly made DVD, a nice booklet and 3 cards. I also mentioned that for $35 bucks you should get a lot more . . . with this effect (Bite Me) you get a lot more . . . yet only $35 bucks . . .

Bite Me Comes with the special deck of cards you need, a nicely produced booklet with a ton of photos along with detailed instructions plus a DVD that shows live performances along with a thorough explanation. I've always been a fan of Gertner's work . . . it's very well thought out and detailed and quite often extremely baffling even to magicians. This effect came to Gertner in a dream which may explain why it's so out of character for him . . . as mentioned, I would never expect a guy like him to perform an effect like this, let alone create the effect.

But just because it's not "him" doesn't mean this is a bad product. Personally, it's not really my style, but I certainly get the appeal . . . so, if you like the effect and think you'll do it and you have $35 dollars itchin' to be spent, then I think you'll be satisfied with this.

4 stars - gem
