Overview
Lubor Fiedler is like the Nutty Professor of magic. Many of his ingenious creations have been made into numerous effects produced by Paul Harris and Tenyo. However, if you plan to buy this DVD to recreate some of his magic, I think you will be disappointed. As interesting as the concepts are, they will not be applicable to most performers' sets unless you are possibly doing a science based magic show. If you want to watch a magic DVD for entertainment purposes only then you might enjoy this.Effect
The DVD contains thirteen tricks in which Fiedler demonstrates the effect and shows the methods. There are two more effects that are shown but not explained. The DVD is an assortment of some of the most unusual magic tricks that look more like science experiments than anything else. The tricks are dated because since the DVDs release some of the props have fell out of favor in a more modern society.Method
The methods used in the performance of these pieces are dated and the props used are not in vogue any more. Four of the thirteen performance usecigarettes and cigarette smoking. Another uses a toxic, flammable liquid, and the rest although there is a clever use of topographical magic, are not very engaging.
Product Quality
The DVD is a transfer of a VHS tape to the DVD format. As such, to judge the quality of the filming by today’s standards would not be fair. The performances although uninspiring were complete, as well as the instruction. Each trick was presented without much fanfare and the explanations were brief as well.Ad Copy Integrity
As far as ad copy goes, nowhere does it state that these will be effects that you will use. It says he demonstrates and reveals some of his most diabolical effects, which he does. Of course every individual has their interpretation of the word diabolical, so my suggestion would be to keep your expectation low.Final Thoughts
Final thoughts on this is that if you are curious about Fiedler’s magic you might enjoy this but if you are considering purchasing this with the intention of utilizing some of the routines, I would pass on this one.(Top ▲)
This disc is the best thing since Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic. (And if you're not familiar with that book, boy are you missing out!) Oh, you probably won't find anything to add to your act, but you'll certainly have fun watching the it. Simply put, Lubor Fiedler is a mad genius, and his methods and magic had me giggling like a 10 year old boy. This would be a great disc to watch with your best magic buddies, so you can kibitz about the methods and concepts.
This is a disc that really shows off the advantage of video. If you read these tricks in a book, there's no way you'd try them and might even be doubtful they'd work. But Fiedler will fool you, probably several times, as you watch. (Their practicality, in some cases, is debatable but that's part of the fun.) This was filmed at least 10 years ago, so it is rather crude, but for the time it is quite well done. Although it's sold by L&L, it's actually a re-labeled Supreme Magic production, so you're spared almost all of the L&L annoyances.
I'm confident that someone is going to buy this disc, adopt (or adapt) something on it, and fool the pants off everyone. It might as well be you, right?
