Random I-Tunes Song of The Moment: Snowblind by Styx
DOA by Jay Sankey Review:
One DVD, one set of gimmicks, Jay Sankey and $40 bucks. Is it gem or is it rubble? Stay tuned to find out.
Full Disclosure: Jay is a very close friend of mine. We've known each other for nearly a decade and have worked together on a couple projects and have had a hand in much of each other's creative work. This particular effect, however, I was not involved in at all.
Effect
A card is "selected" and signed. The signed card appears folded up in a matchbox that the spectator has been holding since before the card was selected.
Method
The effect sounds familiar to you, I'll bet. However, you've never seen a method this clean. Let me first tell you what it's not. It's not a "fold the card on the fly" method. It's not a duplicate signature. There are no funny moves. The moment the card is signed, you immediately put the deck back in the card box. You immediately take the matchbox from the spectator. You immediately open the box and inside is the signed card nicely folded up.
The method is new, different and pretty much sleight-of-hand-less. There's one simple "move" (if you can even call it that), but that's it. You can't get any cleaner than this. The method is easy and 95% relies on the included gimmicks. It's hard to say too much about the method without revealing it, but the bottom line is that it is super clean and almost automatic.
Ad Copy Integrity
The ad copy is 100% accurate, and you get exactly what it claims you get.
Product Quality
The DVD is well lit, well mic'd, etc. It's taught in great depth and covers everything you need to be able to do this effect. The gimmicks are well made and will last a long time. There's one part of the gimmick that will eventually wear out, but it will literally cost you pennies to replace it. However much a box of matches costs in your neck of the woods, that's the cost to replace the gimmick.
The only part I felt was a little bit lacking was the handling of removing the card from the box for the final reveal. Though removing the card is not a hard thing, there are a couple of places where you have to be a little particular with the handling. Nothing you won't easily be able to figure out, but I felt a moment could have been spent discussing that.
Final Thoughts
For forty bucks, you get the cleanest signed card to impossible location I've ever seen. Remember, the card in the matchbox really is their signed card. You don't switch the card. It really is in the matchbox. I've never seen a method like this. It's squeaky clean and well within the grasp of any skill level.
Final Verdict:
5 Stars with a Stone Status of Gem.
