Overview

Sure Shot Dice is another classic magic effect by Apprentice Magic. If you are new to magic and don’t know where to begin your magical journey, Apprentice Magic has currently 26 magic effects in their line for you to choose from. Sure Shot Dice is a magic effect that is decades old and like many magic effects, it depends very heavily on a well thought out script and creative presentation since the magical effect is very short.

Effect

The performer takes out small two-part container which houses two ordinary dice. After a brief preamble on the variables of dice throwing and the inability to control the outcome of thrown dice, the performer offers to try and predict the outcome of the dice shaken within the container. After showing the spectators that the dice do actually change when shaken within the cup, he then predicts the next two numbers that will appear on the top of the dice. He shakes the cup and everyone looks inside and the performer is correct. He does this several times. Not only does he predict the numbers correctly but also which will appear on the right and left side. As one prediction follows another, the amazement builds and he predicts not just the numbers after one shake of the container but two shakes. He ends the presentation by claiming that he’s heading to Vegas while he is on a roll.

Method

The dice are ordinary but the container is not. The container is designed to allow the dice to rotate only once each shake. By noticing the numbers on the dice not visible to the spectators the performer can “predict” the next set of numbers. Using basic math and knowledge of how dice are constructed, a presentation can be built, heightening the impossibilities through each phase. There is a simple but necessary move that must be practiced for this effect to work but within the realm of anyone that has normal function of their arms.

Product Quality

I have never owned an older version of this trick but the quality of the product seems to be very good. The dice are nicely made and the plastic case is robust. This product should last for decades unless it is grossly mishandled. The video is near 11 minutes long and covers a pseudo routine which is based on probability and dice throwing. While I may not use the presentation word for word, with a little creativity one can build upon it and hash out a reasonable script. The instructional portion is very good and gives a couple of tips on how to enhance the presentation.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy claims that it provides an interesting presentation for the effect. In some cases, I found this not so, but as far as Sure Shot Dice I think a short dissertation on probability and dice throwing can be considered a presentation.

Final Thoughts

As a side note, if you wanted to expand on the presentation and don’t mind carrying an extra small item or two, the dice provided in Sure Shot Dice, match the dice provided in Daryl’s Dicey Dots routine also by Murphy’s magic. One can perform Sure Shot Dice first and then “remove” the spots altogether from one of the dice with the Dicey Dots props. A nice one – two punch.

Overview

1 dice shaker. 2 dice, 10:50 minutes of Javier, $9.00, and 1 Sure Shot Dice Magic Review.
Is it gem or is it rubble? Stay tuned to find out.

Effect

You predict the outcome of a shake of the dice.

Method

A teeny bit of practice, and a (mostly) self-working dice shaker.

Product Quality

A hundred years ago I had the old Adam's Magic Kit. It included the Sure Shot Dice, and it worked perfectly! Over the years I've looked for a replacement for it, and have found several companies selling something called Sure Shot Dice. But inevitably I was disappointed upon receiving said Sure Shooter . . . Until now.

This Apprentice Line version looks and works exactly like the one I had when I was a kid. It's perfect. It's a good sturdy plastic (just like the good ol' days), and works exactly as it should. Solid quality. Finally.

The Tutorial, however, has a couple of minor issues. One, at the beginning Javier was trying to show the "audience" (i.e., those of us watching the video) that every time you shake it up, you get different numbers. However, he seemed to fumble a fair bit, and one of the times, he shook the container in a way that will not mix the dice. It seemed as if he wasn't as familiar with the prop as he should be if he's going to teach beginners (target market) how to use this.

Other than that (with on exception below), the tutorial is well done, and Javier covers a couple extra ways to predict the dice beyond the standard way it's usually learned.

There is one other issue. But we'll look at that in the ad copy section below.

Ad Copy Integrity

Claim: "Story / patter included!"
Nope. What's included is more like a "I'm gonna do this, then do that" kind of "presentation" which is teaching beginners bad habits. Not good.

Other than the above, the ad copy is great.

Final Thoughts

Generally speaking I like the Apprentice product line from Murphy's. They are beautifully packaged, and sturdily packaged. They're bringing attention to some classic tricks that got many of us into magic, including myself.

The price is right, and they're doing a great job capturing the spirit and feelings that I remember having as a kid when I first starting learning about magic. I think they're truly inspiring a younger generation with this product line.

This specific product prop is well made, but just has the misstep on the ad copy. Otherwise, this is a solid product.

Final Verdict:
4 Stars with a Stone Status of gem.

Suggestions

If you have a niece/nephew, child or grandchild, etc. just getting into magic, this is a great buy, just make sure you guide them on how to properly present it.
