A massive 4-hour download and accompanying hardcover book filled with one-of-a-kind card magic from one of the world's leading mentalists, Luke Jermay. {.lead}

Many pure mentalists often shy away from playing cards. So, it may come as a shock to learn that Luke Jermay actually loves card magic. The world-renowned mentalist has spent a lifetime studying card magic and considers it to be one of his biggest passions.

More than 20 years of creating card magic is packed into this special download and book set from Vanishing Inc. "You're Only Lying to Yourself" by Luke Jermay features 15 card tricks spanning everything from traditional card magic to straight mentalism pieces.

All of the effects in this download are easy to perform and require almost no sleight of hand. They're well within the range of magicians and mentalists alike, including the aforementioned mentalism purists that don't often work with playing cards.

These direct and powerful pieces of magic are as fun to learn as they are to perform. Luke has developed novel plots and techniques that leave the perfect amount of uncertainty in the minds of your audience. While they know you're probably not performing real magic, they just won't be able to shake the feeling that you may have some sort of supernatural powers.

There's a pseudo gambling poker routine done blindfolded that gives the impression of incredible sleight of hand skills- without actually having to learn any advanced moves-as well as updates on classic card tricks. You'll love Luke's new approach to the Ambitious Card and his Shuffled Out of this World that integrates all the dirty work into the effect itself so you can use a shuffled deck in the middle of your act.

As Luke Jermay is a professional mentalist by trade, the way he approaches all card magic tricks is unique. Beyond sharing some stunning prediction effects, Luke also shows how he can make one of the most famous card tricks in the world more memorable. His take on the Spectator Finds the Aces not only employs a unique method, but is also structured around finding a birthday or something else more personal to create an unforgettable experience.

All of this and so much more is available in the "You're Only Lying to Yourself" box set. Each set comes with a special download card and accompanying hardcover book that dives into the history of the effects.

Overview

The credo in real estate is location, location, location. However, when it comes to releases by Luke Jermay the focus is and has always been about premise, premise, premise. Luke Jermay and Vanishing Inc, hits it out of the ball park once again with his release called You’re Only Lying to Yourself. You’re Only Lying to Yourself is a collection of 15 card tricks performed with the Jermay touch. What is the Jermay touch you ask? The Jermay touch is Luke Jermay’s ability to take a routine or trick that has been time worn and reinvents it with a sensible and relatable premise. If you want to perform classics like no other magician than read on.

Effect

You’re Only Lying to Yourself is a four-hour download and included book in which Jermay takes classics like The Collectors, Red / Black separation and the Ambitious Card just to name a few and performs them with a completely different slant. The idea of premise or something spectators can relate to has always been Jermay’s vision of mentalism. Although card magic is Jermay’s second love, he infuses his card magic with the same concepts as his mentalism routines.

Method

The 15 tricks presented on this offering were never meant to be a continuous set or performance. Many of them require a little set up, a marked deck or a gimmick which would make them difficult to stage them into a routine. Some like The Collectors can be done in the hands and only need a place to lay the deck down and others would require supporting props. In addition, there is some intermediate to advanced sleight of hand work. Familiarity with double lifts, false cuts and shuffles, palming and culling techniques will be needed.

Product Quality

What you receive is a 4-hour downloadable video and a small 4” x 5” hardcover book with a bit of history and credits behind each trick. The video is very good as far as the photography, lighting and sound. Each trick is explained thoroughly and completely. When it comes to the sleights, the explanation is cursory at best and he references where to learn them in a more complete manor. One of the significant values you get out of purchasing just about anything Jermay releases is his thinking. He delves into why one must create engaging plots to capture the spectator's interest. One of my favorites is his fourth version of his original release An Extraordinary Exhibition of Seeing with the Fingertips (also rereleased as Colorblind). He begins with a tale of a girl, blind from birth, who was able to see with her fingertips. Who would not want to hear what happens next? The book is 82 pages long and extolls the origin of the trick and credits. It does not add much to the package although it’s a nice touch.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad claims “all the tricks are easy to perform and requires little sleight of hand”. I will take exception to that statement which is why it is not a 5-star review for me. As a president of a local SAM, I see a lot of performers and many so called “card guys”. Sleights like roadrunner culls, palms and other card manipulations which require nerves of steel under pressure is rarely seen in most of the card performers I watch. This is definitely a product I recommend to work up to because you will get hard hitting magic with no contrived stories like “the four Jacks are four robbers” etc.

Final Thoughts

You’re only lying to Yourself is a very worthwhile investment even if you perform only a few of the possible 15 tricks on this download.
