There are very few books on the business of magic. Most of those books are shallow dips into the world of show business. They simply cover only the basics and sometimes not even that. “How to sell your act”, is at the opposite end of that spectrum. It is a step by step course in getting your magic business off the ground.

It is an E-book that is 117 pages long. It contains “zero” fluff, no filler, or wasted pages. Tim Martson gets to the meat in a hurry. If you are serious about selling your act, you will be reading this more than once.

Tim takes you through the process of thinking about your act and how it might work in the real world. He explains that business is the bigger word in show business. Right from the top he gets you thinking about ROI and how it will affect how you do business.

Throughout the book Tim has highlighted “Tim’s Top Tips”. I really like those and if he just sent you a sampling of ten out of the book, you would probably scoop this up right away. Additionally, in different chapters he will list out the pros and cons of different ideas. Again, this is pure gold.

If you are just starting out, I can’t recommend this book enough. It WILL save you time and money. If you have been making your living for some time with performing, I can still recommend this book. You will most likely find something that you didn’t know or just needed to hear again. Another thing I liked about the book was that it is well written. It was fun to read and had a great flow to it.

Finally, I want to say that Tim covers so much material in these pages that I am quite surprised. Branding, SEO, ROI, Internet marketing, TV, Pay per click, and on and on are covered. You won’t be an expert when you are done reading this book, but you will now know what you need to be studying. Too many magicians want to own 100 magic books and 1 business book. It will take more than that to learn business. But, this should be one of the first business books you get if you want to Sell your Act. It is a $1000 dollars worth of information for only $25.

Books on business for magicians and entertainers are rare. Even more rare is a book that is both up-to-date and full of useful information. I'm happy to say that Tim Marston's How To Sell Your Act hits the mark on both counts.

DISCLAIMER: As I am writing this, we have a huge "affiliate" banner for this product on our site. My thoughts on this product have in no way been swayed by that fact. I base my review solely on the knowledge I've gained over 30 years of performing and 15 years of building websites and online businesses.

The first thing you notice about this eBook is the production value. Many authors tend to skimp on design for digital books. This book is quite the opposite. The author seems to be taking advantage of the fact that he can get away with graphical elements that might be cost-prohibitive if the book were printed.

The other thing that's obvious from the very beginning is that the content was learned from the school of hard knocks. This isn't just regurgitated and rearranged from a few books on the author's bookshelf.

The organization makes sense. We begin with an overview and some great words of encouragement and motivation. The first few chapters are about you, your act and building your brand. Chapters 6 through 10 cover choosing markets and clientele, producing traditional publicity materials and various ways to market yourself. The final chapters cover internet marketing. Peppered among the chapters are insightful "Tips from Tim" and "Pros and Cons" for most of the actionable items.

The one thing you won't find is fluff. In fact, if this book fails to help you, it's only because you're not putting in the work.

Some of the highlights, at least for me were:
  • Learning to think in terms of ROI (Return on Investment)
  • The importance of great copy
  • Choosing honesty and ethical behavior
  • Great and detailed SEO tips and tricks
  • Getting the most out of PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns

My only disappointment with the book was the lack of detail in some areas. I felt the book could easily have been another 50 pages long and gone into more details, especially in the chapter on websites. Of course, I build online businesses for a living and may be a bit biased.

The good news is that if you want more, everyone who buys the book receives a customers-only newsletter that covers new and more in-depth topics.

If you're serious about making a living as a performer, you need this book.
