Triad Coins

Joshua Jay

Vanishing Inc.

(Based on 2 reviews)
Imagine what it would look like if you could REALLY vanish coins into thin air. Then watch this trailer. THIS is how it would look. No funny moves. No fast motion. No camera edits. You roll back your sleeves. You show three coins. One by one, they just... disappear. Triad Coins is a revelation in coin magic.

Triad Coins is a double-shell and coin system that allows you to produce, vanish, or change three half dollars at will. You can show BOTH hands entirely empty after the last vanish, and perform the effect in short sleeves. Joshua Jay has honed this miracle over a ten-year period, and the result is an elegant, smooth, and extremely deceptive routine, possible ONLY with Triad Coins.

If you have ever seen Joshua Jay lecture, this is the trick he closes with. Long available ONLY through Joshua Jay directly, Vanishing Inc. Magic is proud to release Triad Coins to the world of magicians.

WHAT YOU GET

You get a set of gimmicks that consist of a regular half dollar, an expanded shell that fits over the half dollar, and another expanded shell that fits over the first expanded shell. You also get a download video.

WHAT IS COOL

The coins are superb and the instruction is superb. He covers basic handling of the coins and a variety of routine ideas and the details of their handling. None of the moves are terribly difficult. The methods are clean, clear, and very angle proof. The product is true to the ad copy.

What is unique about these coins is the methods Joshua uses that includes the way they are nested as well as the way they are used.

Another cool think is that the set includes one coin that is completely regular and can be handed out.

WHAT ARE THE DOWNSIDES

I don’t see much downside to this, it is an excellent product with excellent explanations by Joshua. The one thing that I would say is that there are other types of coins. The triad coins consisting of three coins that nest together as one is not my favorite set of coins. Personally, I prefer the Symphony Coins by Roy Kueppers because they use magnets to make what appear to be four coins stick together as one coin. You can flip them in the air and they look like one coin. You don’t have to worry as much about how you handle them as with the shells. I only bring this up in the downside section because one potential downside to this product is that a different type of product might be better for you. You should consider the differences between them and determine what would work best for you. The routine that I do is best done with the Symphony coins.

AT A GLANCE

Skill level required: 3 of 5. You could use these with almost any skill level, but I think it would be best to put in the time to practice and get your skills up to at least a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5.
Audience management skill required: 2 of 5. The coins make it much easier for angles to not be as big an issue than if you are using un-gimmicked coins.
Performance angles: 360 degrees
Reset time required: You can reset in front of your audience.
DIY time involved in advance: None

VERDICT

This is a GREAT set of coins and Joshua Jay does a tremendous job in the explanations. You should consider the different types of gaffed coins and decide which is better for you. Personally I prefer Symphony coins that use magnets and thin coins instead of shells.

Suggestions

This is one time where I would suggest you work on imitating Joshua’s exact moves and routines and then modify them for your own routines.

Triad Coins by Joshua Jay is a gimmicked set of coins that allow you to produce and vanish 3 coins in a practically clean way.

- Is the Ad-Copy correct? -
The ad-copy tells you exactly what to expect, a double-shell and coin system so you know what you’re getting is heavily gimmicked in order to allow you to perform the effect.

The latest ad copy says that 3 routines are included, however in watching the instructional download, which runs 16 minutes there was really only 2 routines. The first routine is the appearance of three coins followed by the vanishing of the three coins, so technically you could say this is two routines, but I’d count it as one. The second routine is a method for 3-Fly using some additional half dollar coins which you’ll need to provide yourself.

The claim that you can do this with your sleeves rolled up is true, but the trick does have a clothing requirement that isn’t mentioned.

- Product Quality -
The Triad Coins are well engineered and work well, nesting within each other snugly and with enough practice you’ll get comfortable handling them. It comes in a nice box which you can store it in, however I ended up putting mine in the zipper compartment of the Pro Carrier Deluxe as I use it at gigs, then load it into my pocket while performing.

The video tutorial is shot with a single camera in one take for each routine. Joshua Jay performs the main routine and goes through the handling of it. He then goes through a handling for 3-Fly explaining the method. There is no performance of this routine however, which some people might not like, but if you’ve seen enough coin magic, you’ve most likely seen a 3-Fly routine and know the general idea of how it goes. Unfortunately, he doesn’t teach how to clean up at the end of this routine as you are left dirty after you have the final coin travel to the participants hand. If you were to try and reset after doing 3-Fly you’d need to fiddle with the coins for about 5-10 seconds.

The video runs 16 minutes and is packed with all the details you need to perform the main routine. Joshua essentially cut all the fat so there’s no fancy slow mo shots or unnecessary street performance. If you miss any detail, you’ll have to rewind and rewatch, which is something Joshua mentions in the way he teaches this routine.

- Is the Effect Good? -
There are two main parts to this effect that would interest magicians, the coin set itself and the final, clean vanish. The main routine presented is really good if you’re looking for a quick coin effect and is suitable for walkaround gigs and even video as your hands don’t need to go south to retrieve/ditch anything. Add in flash paper for the coin appearance and you’ve got a quick and visual routine that is sure to get good reactions. The method is easy to do, you’ve just got to watch your angles as it best works if the audience is infront of you. Anyone behind will be exposed to the method and you can only hand out one of the coins if you want to hand anything out.

The vanish of the coin to end the routine has some clothing requirements, which shouldn’t be a problem for most magicians but will be something to consider before purchasing. Without giving away the overall method, if you watch the trailer you’ll work out what’s required to accomplish the vanish and if this is something you already wear then you won’t have issues learning this. If you don’t have it, then it’s a good reason to get one if you want to perform with this coin set. You are also in a position to instantly reset in a few moments inbetween tricks.
You can still perform the overall routine without the final clean vanish, any other vanish you know will generally work, just be aware that you’re working with a coin set so there are still loose items in play.

- What is bad? -
There is not much bad about this coin, as long as you use it correctly and look after it well. Some magicians may be concerned by seeing the shell but when handling coins the audience is not likely to notice discrepancies unless they’re not impressed by the fact that you’re producing and vanishing three coins out of the air.

Keep in mind it only comes in half dollar size, so no Morgan Dollar versions are out there if you want a bigger coin.

- Final Thoughts -
This is a product that I use regularly in my gigs when I need something quick and visual to either open a set or break up a set which can be card heavy. I’m happy just performing the main routine and not the 3-Fly routine. Even though I can perform other coin routines, I find this one has the most magical moments in such a small amount of time and can be done with patter or silently if it’s too loud. I highly recommend this if you just want one coin effect to add to your repertoire.
