Aeon by Benjamin Mei - Trick Review

New York magician Benjamin Mei has come up with some very visual and original finger ring magic through Ellusionist that will make you rework your ring routine or if you don’t have one yet, provide a great jump off point to get into it.

We are treated to a range of ring sleights/moves, which you can put together for a routine or add to your current routine. Rings appear on your empty finger, disappear from your palm onto your finger or visually change as you strike your hand over it.

First the ad copy! We’re told that we get moves/routines and ring-gimmicks for this product. Calling the rings gimmicks is interesting as these are solid rings that aren’t exactly “gimmicked” in the expected sense in that you can wear this ring and hand it for examination. The only gimmick feature about the ring is that they were custom-engineered to be low friction, which the ad copy tells you right off the bat. As for the moves and routines, they’re very much described in a way to sound impossibly magical and when you see the performances of the moves/routines, you do get the sense of what Benjamin was trying to accomplish, however you get 11 moves and one routine, the routine does not use all 11 moves taught, which makes sense as that would be an overload and unwise.

We get 5 rings with different sizes for $34.95 which is quite good as sometimes a barrier with starting ring magic is getting a ring that fits you well. In this case, you’re given a bunch of them so you’re likely going to find one that is your size so you can start learning straight away. The rings are great quality and the low friction claim is exactly that, extremely low friction which is a necessary quality for a lot of the moves taught. I also own the Odyssey ring by Calen Morelli and the ring provided with that is heavier and while it is normal, there’s a noticeable difference in the friction, so I was not able to do some of the moves in Aeon with that ring.

The teaching is clear and good, Benjamin teaches in a casual way without being too technical so it is easy for anyone to follow along. We get a performance or two of the move/routine and then a breakdown of how to do it, then finally we get slow motion review of the move, which is very helpful as these moves can be hard and angle-y.

How are the moves and routine? Very visual and you’re likely to find a few moves you like to put together in your own routine. Like coin magic, ring magic can be angle sensitive so not all the moves can be done surrounded, and some have particular angles in which the move can be seen and appreciated, for example RTF, where ring teleports from a closed fist onto the other hand’s finger is performed from over your shoulder, so for you to show someone this move, you’d have to turn your back to them for them to see. Finger Flicker is the best move from the lot as it can be down at face height, is very visual and has good angles. It’s a move I do often and once you learn that, some of the other moves build off the same principle so learning the others is not too difficult. The Aeon routine combines 3 of the moves taught and ends with a visual production of another object, so this is a bit of a bonus where Benjamin teaches you his methods for retrieving items and how to produce them.

If you want to expand your ring routine or get started with one, Aeon is a good investment and very well priced. It’s not for the faint of heart as it can be very difficult but it appeals to the move monkey in us who like to fidget around with things, and what better thing to fidget with than the ring on your finger! Just be careful not to drop it and lose it!
