Overview

The Haunted Key Deluxe is a great Haunted Key routine. The key is great, the video explanation by Javier Fuenmayor is great and it is a fun routine for any magician.

If you have never played around with the haunted key, this is a great intro.

Effect

An old tarnished key is placed in your palm and very slowly it turns over as if a ghost touched it. It is very spooky and super cool.

Method

The method is no so much of a secret but in the design and weight of the key. Not every key will work and this key is perfect.

Product Quality

The key is so great. It looks old, it feels old and the design is perfect for the look and effect. The instructional video is great and it is about 39 minutes long. It contains a basic routine, a routine with cards and even a routine with some invisible thread, which is not needed to do the basic routine.

Overview

Effect

As the storyteller weaves his macabre tale, he is holding an old, rusty skeleton key on the palm of his hand. As the story reaches its blood-curdling climax, the key which has been sitting casually on his hand, slowly starts to turn over as if possessed by the very demons he was telling of. This and many more spine tingling effects can be achieved with The Haunted Key Deluxe.

Method

Although the key can be used with invisible thread and magnets, the original method which is simpler but more interesting. The Haunted Key works by a method known as ideomotor response. Ideomotor response is a physiological/psychological phenomenon where the brain subconsciously sends micro movements to the hand (in this case) to make the key turn over on its own. With practice, the performer can illicit these movements and through suggestion make the spectator actually illicit these movements. In both cases, the hand seemingly is static does not intentionally try to make the key rotate. The key is ordinary but with some needed properties to make the magic happen.

Product Quality

The key is very well made and is comparable to keys that have costed several times more. The necessary attributes that are required in a haunted key are all present which makes this an incredible value. Firstly, the length needed for the key to sit on the palm comfortably and securely is primary. This key measures in at 4 5/8" and weighs in at 1.66 ounces. The size is perfect for walk around and it is a nice hefty weight for controllability. At this length it is very visible without being obnoxious. The bow (the round top) and the bit (the part that goes into the lock) is perfectly balanced to achieve a nice slow rotation which is what we are looking for. The key itself is metal and can be controlled using magnets if so desired. Of course, invisible thread can also be used for additional effects. The video instruction is well done and runs close to forty minutes long. The instructions covers basic handling as well as a few routines with the key.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is 100% accurate. The key will work exactly as stated in the advertisement. Keep in mind that this is a prop, its function is only to enhance your routines. The key too success (pun intended) with the haunted key is to develop good story telling techniques.

Suggestions

The video is well done and shows the use of the key with and with additional objects. If the haunted key concept intrigues you I highly recommend finding other sources of inspiration to work with. The following publications are specifically about working with the haunted key and or keys in general. Look into Heavily Haunted by Dale Hildebrandt, Key Mysteries by Steve Drury and if you can locate it, What Lies Beyond The Doors by Ed Solomon.
