The spectator is given a gun and a simple proposition: "Shoot each of the three balloons and you win a prize. However, to be fair, the three balloons must be hit within one minute.
Lend me your watch," says the performer, "So that we can keep track of the time." The spectator does as requested. "Oh, yes, there's one more thing. To make it interesting we'll place your watch into this little canister and allow it to swing in front of the balloons. Just remember to shoot the balloon when your watch is NOT in front of it. It's like miniature golf with an attitude."
So saying, the watch is placed in the canister which is then suspended, pendulum-like in front of the balloons. Giving the canister a gentle shove, the watch begins to swing freely in front of the balloons.
"Try the balloon on the end," advises the performer. The spectator aims and 'BANG', the balloon is destroyed, the remnants hanging from a ribbon in front of the target.
"Now try the other end", says the performer; "After all, physics dictates that you have twice as much time with the end balloons." The spectator aims at the other end balloon and "BANG", he misses, hitting the center balloon instead.
"Wow", says the dismayed performer, "your aim is a lot worse than I thought." With this the performer admonishes the spectator to take careful aim at the last remaining balloon. He aims carefully and fires" "BANG"- A BEVY OF WATCH PARTS FALL FROM THE CANISTER!
Pointing at the spectator, the performer says, "You probably ruined my equipment!" Dumping out the canister, a series of broken watch parts drop to the floor. "And you haven't done your watch any favors either. Well, I'll make you a deal. So that this isn't a total loss, if you can hit the third balloon I'll still give you a five dollar bill- I figure you can buy two of those watches with that."
The spectator aims and fires: The third balloon breaks but this time, falling from within the balloon and hanging from the ribbon is the spectator's watch!
