Electronic "Don't Ring That Bell"

Many years ago David Howarth designed a ‘Don’t Ring That Bell’ unit which was used by many professionals, but it had a few limitations. This newly designed model will fulfil all the requirements of the performer who wants to inject some comedy into his act. The apparatus consists of a DOOR BELL UNIT mounted on a thin tray as in the illustration. Running from the door bell is a length of wire which in turn connects to a BELL PUSH. The performer explains that his next trick is very boring and the audience will almost certainly fall asleep, so he hands the tray to a spectator and demonstrates that by pressing the bell push the BELL RINGS WITH A LOUD TONE. He instructs the spectator that she must NOT ring the bell until the very end of the trick ... not during the trick ... but right at the end and that will waken the audience up. The performer walks right away and commences a trick ... but almost immediately the BELL RINGS. He goes over to the spectator and reminds her NOT to ring the bell just yet. He commences the trick again and once more the BELL RINGS. Now this business can carry on for as long as you wish until you are apparently at screaming pitch. ‘Just leave the darn bell alone’, yells the performer, but now the ultimate disaster happens because whilst still in the hands of the spectator the bell begins RINGING NON-STOP. Finally the magician takes the bell off the spectator and manages to stop it ringing. This is a really terrific piece of business and always evokes loud laughter from the hardest audience. Here are the technical details: The bell push does genuinely ring the bell when pressed, however, the unit has a built-in timer hidden inside it which can be programmed to ring up to 8 times before the finale of the non-stop ringing automatically occurs. Everything is completely concealed and there are no visible switches to be seen. The routine can be varied in many ways - it can be used for children’s shows or in Cabaret using it as a passion meter announcing when a lady feels excited by your magic and you keep running over to her when the bell rings. However, you choose to use it, you will find that audience reaction is very strong. Today’s audiences want to have a ‘good laugh’ and the performer who can present a comedy element in his show will always get the work.
