Overview

We live in an incredible time for magic. Not only has technology expanded the wonders of magic through electronics, phone apps, robotics, 3D printing and other scientific achievements embraced by the magic community but even older, more traditional magic has benefited through thoughtful and introspective marketing. Companies like Murphy’s Magic has made getting into and learning magic easier than ever before. Based on the original L & L World’s Greatest Magic series, Murphy’s has smartly decided to release Deluxe Sets which not only have downloadable video instruction but the necessary props are included as well.

Effect

Nobody knows when the first rope trick was ever performed but rope magic has probably been around since rope was invented and that’s a long time. Although many ropes tricks exist one of the most performed is The Cut and Restored Rope. The basic premise is that the magician displays a solid single piece of rope and though multiple time having been cut with a scissor, the rope ends up a single piece. Various versions of this premise exist and are as different as the performers are performing them.

Method

The method involves well-coordinated and justified movements and clever sleight of hand to achieve the illusion that the rope has been cut and restored. The scripting and blocking of the performance piece also plays an integral role as the spectators’ attention is directed away from the dirty work.

Product Quality

The set contains 20 feet of premium magicians’ rope and a link to the downloadable video instructions. Six performances are offered by prominent magicians. Performances and explanations are by Michael Finny, Dan Harlan, Aldo Colombini, Jeff Sheridan, Ted Lesley and Flip. The video runs 1 hour and 45 minutes and are compiled from the L & L video series called World’s Greatest Magic Series. Although the video are several decades old, the video quality is excellent and the performances still play well. They range from the comedic Michael Finney to the non-speaking manipulative style of Jeff Sheridan’s.

The ad copy is accurate and for someone getting into rope magic, this is a great start.
