Overview

Ghost Ink by Taiwan Ben is an interesting take on what would appear to be a simple plot. The method is not only very clever but looks like real magic. If you like to meld mentalism and magic and do not care if you mix the two, then Ghost Ink definitely fits the bill.

Effect

The performer shows five ESP symbols and the spectator narrows the five down to one. They ultimately choose the circle. You take out a deck of cards and a Sharpie® marker and by casting a shadow of the point of the marker on the back of the top card of the deck an image slowly appears that matches the ESP symbol chosen.

Method

The method involved relies on a simple force and a gimmicked card. The force is known as The Australian Down Under Deal but you can just as easily use equivoque to arrive at the desired ESP card. After a card is chosen, a deck of cards is produced and by casting the shadow of the marker on the card, the image of the ESP symbol slowly appears as the marker circumnavigates the card.

Product Quality

What you receive are the five ESP cards, a genuine Bicycle card with a circle printed on the back and a gimmicked card in which you can make a circle slowly appear. You will have to provide a double backer and a marker if you want to perform the routine as explained in the tutorial. The cards are of decent quality and are marked so you can tell one from the other. The back design is not a common one and is of Asian origin. The printed card is a red Bicycle card. The gimmicked card is incredibly well engineered and actually does look like an image is forming on the back. Properly practiced it looks like CG. The gimmick is finely crafted and will not suffer any heavy handedness. The tutorial is 19 minutes long and explains the basic handling and performance. As a trick it does not last long but the effect is definitely magical.

The ad copy is accurate and to emphasize the fact that that as the image of the ESP symbol begins to form, it looks incredibly real.
