In my NOT so humble opinion Mastering the Art of Magic is one of the most important books on our craft that I have read. If you are serious about your work, MTAOM will inspire you to create magic that is your very own.
Eugene Burger has helped a generation of magicians to understand that there is more to magic than the method behind a trick. In MTAOM Eugene touches on very practical performing issues such as how to create impact with your magic, how to best deal with hecklers, how to make the spectator the star of the show, how to rehearse your magic and most important for the serious artist, Eugene stresses the importance of critical awareness and honesty when approaching your own work.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. The real secrets are hidden in the explanations of the effects and the thought process behind the creation of these routines. This book is full of practical performing tips, real world advice and if you look deep enough a life lesson or two.
Please don’t follow blindly the lessons Eugene has presented. For as Eugene states in the introduction to MTAOM, “…I was writing a spiritual biography—that is, I was explaining to myself and to the reader how I do these things and why they work for me as I do them. I certainly was NOT suggesting that my way is the only way, or even the best way, for others to follow.”
