A spectator selects a card. The performer tears off the card's corner, then withdraws a lighter and instructs the spectator to burn the corner, which vanishes in a spectacular flash of flames. The spectator is then asked to examine the lighter: to their delight and surprise, they discover the torn corner trapped inside the lighter itself!

Overview

Enlighten by Ravi Mayar and Magic Tao is a Torn Corner in Lighter effect. Enlighten is based on a previous version by Mayer but expanded upon with new methods and routines. I have to confess; I wasn’t expecting much with this release but I was pleasantly surprised. Read on and find out why.

Effect

A spectator is offered to pick a card from a deck. The corner of the chosen card is torn off by the performer and the rest of the card is handed back to the spectator. The performer reaches into his pocket and removes a Bic lighter and light it. He holds the flame to the torn corner and in a flash it disappears. The corner is gone but now for long because inside the lighter is the corner which matches the chosen card.

Method

There are several things going on with this effect. First, a force is needed to make sure the card chosen is the one needed for the effect to happen. The lighter, although perfectly ordinary, is gimmicked with a corner of a card which matches the force card. Finally, a good shuttle pass or some other method is needed to make the corner disappear. Each component of the effect is not difficult but is well coordinated for the effect to appear seamless.

Product Quality

The DVD was surprisingly well produced. The DVD covers three methods to load the lighter with the torn corner and different versions of the performance depending on your skill set and your vision on which matches your style the best. The filming was excellent and taught at a very easy to follow pace. The close-ups on how to gimmick the lighter were incredibly detailed and easy to follow. The more I watched the more the trick intrigued me. What I liked about this is that they aren’t selling you an expensive gimmicked lighter but a method to load an ordinary Bic (or similar) style lighter. Of course the lighter has to be transparent for his to work and for full transparency, the corner cannot be removed from the lighter to see if it matches up perfectly with the card.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is accurate but is remiss in stating that this will require DIY and no materials are provided. Regardless, the DIY is nominal, the instructional is step by step and this is a great value for someone who wants to do this type of effect without an expensive gimmick.
