Overview

Many magicians often contemplate as to how they can earn a living performing magic. There are lots of books and DVDs on tricks but very few on how to assemble a complete parlour act. Craig Petty is an accomplished magician in the UK a well as a creator of numerous effects. Parlour is a two DVD set showcasing Craig Petty’s parlour act followed by the explanations of the tricks.

Effect

Parlour is one magician’s vision of a parlour act. Keep in mind that when purchasing a DVD set such as this, you are buying the concept and construction of the act, but you might not be enthralled by the performers persona. More than likely Petty’s performance style will not mesh with yours. He is loud, brash, verbose, talks fast and peppers his performance with hackneyed jokes. However, looking past the performing style, Petty offers up very usable tricks with some unusual twists.

Method

Of course, on a DVD with numerous tricks on it there is a lot of things going on. The DVDs run 4 hours and 45 minutes. Although much of Petty’s tricks use standard objects such a cards and coins with gimmicks, other items are needed as well such as a silk to egg, card to wallet and an I-Phone and other items as well. Basic to advanced sleight of hand is also at play. This DVD set is for someone who will dedicate themselves to watching the set and selecting a piece to work on, one at a time.

Product Quality

The production quality is fairly good. It is not as finely filmed and attractive as other DVDs I have seen but is done well enough to easily follow the act and understand the routines. The act is performed in front of a live audience and the camera work and sound is fine. The studio explanations are thorough and the camera angles changes as needed.

Ad Copy Integrity

You are getting exactly as the ad described, an entire Parlour act as Craig Petty performs it. Much of what is performed is his rendition of tricks that already existed. If you are looking for something completely new, then maybe you should pass on this one.
