Dictionary Test

Vellucci, Max

(Based on 1 review)
AN EXTRAORDINARY BOOK TEST USING ANY DICTIONARY

The mentalist proposes an experiment that has to do with all the possible words of the Italian language (or any other language) and takes a dictionary of the language in question.

He scrolls through the pages and asks the viewer to tell him stop when he wants, to read a word and memorize it.

He does the same thing with a second viewer who explicitly asks to look at all the possible words contained in the two pages he stopped at and to freely choose one.

At this point the mentalist is able to identify the two words.

- A direct and easy to perform book test
- Full performance and detailed explanation
- Two words, two spectators
- A single dictionary for an entire act of almost 10 minutes
- No list of words to write or remember
- No fishing
- Instantly replicable with different words
- Any dictionary in any language
- Everything can be given to check
- Suitable for both classical and scientific mentalism

Overview

The Dictionary Test by Max Vellucci is a book test using an ordinary dictionary that can be purchased online or at a bookstore. I personally like book tests and own a few dozen versions of book tests. As a book test “collector” we are always looking for the “holy grail” of book tests. Criteria such as “can it be inspected”, “can someone read through it”, “does it look like a magic prop”, “how much memory work does it require” and numerous other concerns always play into whether one likes or dislikes a particular book test. The Dictionary test alleviates all those concerns because it is a regular dictionary.

Effect

Two spectators are on stage and are asked to look at and memorize a word in a dictionary. One spectator will write their thought of word on a pad and with it four other random words. The second spectator remembers a word and writes three words they can think or that are associated with the thought of word but not so related so it is obvious. The mind reader starts with the first spectator and through the voice inflections of the spectator answering “yes” to each word spoken aloud, the mind reader correctly determines the word. For the second spectator, the mind reader divines the last and first letter of the thought of word and finally reveals it in its entirety

Method

The download has two areas of focus. The majority of the download is devoted to the method that utilizes a prepared dictionary. Although the dictionary is ordinary, it is prepared in an interesting way that will insure you always end up on the page you want them too. The book can be casually inspected and even held by the spectator. Another method incorporates a technique developed by Larry Becker. Although I am very familiar with this technique which is commonly used in many book tests, it never dawned on me that it can be applied to a dictionary. The lesser portion of the download covers an impromptu version of the book test using traditional techniques.

Product Quality

As said, the dictionary is ordinary but one should inspect the dictionary to see if it has the attributes needed to do the effect. Thus, personally going to a bookstore and looking at various dictionaries is a prudent idea. The download is about thirty minutes long and dubbed in English. The dubbing is clear and very understandable so that is not a hindrance. The performance of the effect and explanation is good and thorough. The techniques covered can also be applied to other book test you may already own.

Ad Copy Integrity

The ad copy is pretty accurate. The statement “instantly replicable with different words” may require a little more creativity on your part. For the first spectator that is true, for the second you will have to have tiered force pages already created to do the second phase. So, yes with some foresight and extra effort it can be true for spectator number two.

Final Thoughts

Actual magic book tests are expensive. As such, although the creators say “beat the book up”, “rumple the pages”, “make it look used and worn”, many of us don’t have the heart to mangle a $200 book test and in reality we treat it with kid gloves. The Dictionary Test allows you the luxury of treating the book carelessly and worry free. Why not, isn’t it just a cheap dictionary”? So, if you want an inexpensive book test that can be inspected and treated casually, I would definitely look into The Dictionary Test.
