The Spirit Slates is a classic mentalism effect that has been around for over a century, and it has become a favorite among magicians and mentalists. There are various versions of this effect, with different sizes and materials, from plastic to wood.

In order to share this wonder with more people and to continue the tradition, we have collaborated with Axel Vergnaud to present Spirit NameTag, a true everyday carry version of the Spirit Slates.

The Spirit NameTag takes into account the pros and cons of different versions of the Spirit Slates. After months of experimentation, we have reduced the size of the traditional two large slates and replaced them with luggage tags, making it more practical and in line with modern life, and bringing the Spirit Slates effect into the world of EDC magic.

With the Spirit NameTag, you can now perform the Spirit Slates effect anytime and anywhere, no longer limited to formal and professional performances. You remove two blank luggage tags from your keychain, place them on the table, and turn them over to reveal what the audience has in mind.

To better match the look of luggage tags, the Spirit NameTag is made of ABS plastic and covered with a waterproof film that also allows you to use whiteboard markers and oil-based markers like Sharpie to write your prediction.

Its gimmick ensures complete silence during activation. The process is fully automatic, making it easy to perform. All you have to do is put the two tags together, without shaking or flipping them, and the effect happens.

The size of each luggage tag is 6cm * 3.5cm (approximately 2.4 * 1.4 inches), making it portable and visually appealing. It is also a 1:1 replica of everyday luggage tags, with identical appearance and texture. You can attach it to a keychain and carry it anywhere.

A variety of effects can be performed with the Spirit NameTag, including Prediction, Spirit Writing, Handwriting Appearing or Disappearing, Memory Manipulation, and more. You can also utilize a single tag and the gimmick to expand its usage, making it flexible for different situations.

Overview

Over a hundred years ago, a mentalist known as Alexander along with Thayer Magic Company created what is known today as Spirit Slates. Spirit Slates are typically used by bizarre magic performers to “prove” contact with the spirits from beyond. Spirit Slates are typically made from actual slates or material appearing like slates and surrounded by a wood frame. Most are fairly large in size and are relegated to parlour or stage performances. There have been creators who miniaturized these to close up allowing the performer to perform this routine in a setting other than parlour. TCC Presents has now released The Spirit Name Tag, one of the smallest set of Spirit Slates allowing them to be carried on a key ring.

Effect

Spirit Slates allow for a variety of performance styles from those who want to make a prediction appear from nowhere to having a message delivered from a contacted spirit. Although there can be a wide range of performance styles, I personally feel this falls into the realm of the bizarre magic performer.

Method

The method, like all Spirit Slates, utilizes a removable panel to hide the prewritten message. When needed, the slates are closed and the message appears when taken apart. The ease of the transferring the panel plus how quiet the transfer is, is indicative of the quality of the slates. The actual “move” is natural and justified and the magic is in the moment the performer creates with his script.

Product Quality

Like all TCC Presents products, The Spirit Name Tag is a high quality, well thought out product. The tags themselves are made from plastic and the panels on which the information is written are white board type material. The tags are lightweight and the panel transfer effortlessly and quietly. The 32 minute downloadable instructional is in English and covers the basic handling, plus a few routines. The routines provided revolve around predictions and cards. Personally, would have liked to see more “spirit” based performances being I think this is the real venue for Spirit Tags. Although I am an ardent TCC fan, I felt the routine offering fell short on what these tags could have been used for.

Ad Copy Integrity

Like all TCC product they deliver high quality and rarely disappoint. The Tags are well made and the instructional is fairly good. If you are one who is familiar with slate routines than you can perform your favorites wherever you may be. If this is your first slate purchase, I recommend you seek out other sources for routines as well to put these into good use.
