This DVD is solid and full of good workable material as well as plenty of really advanced stuff that will keep you coming back as you build your skills. I love DVDs like this that constantly challenge me. Just don’t be surprised when you find that many of the effects on the DVD are tough to do.
The format of the DVD is basically a performance to the camera, followed by an explanation, with added theory and ideas as needed. Jay gets to be a little crazy in this but I didn’t mind too much, you should be warned that there is some language and a couple jokes that might offend some as well.
Jay really stretches his creative muscles here and you have the opportunity to see how skilled he really is. I love watching him at the top of his game like this. It’s too bad that they didn’t get any live performances in this volume. There’s no way for me to hit everything on the DVD so I’ll run over just my favorites.
The Royal Rivet is a super visual way to find a selected card using a coin or washer. Basically by slamming the coin on the table the card comes flying out of the deck and connects itself to the coin. This is maybe the most visual piece on the DVD.
The Warm Up Production is a slick and simple production of a coin from seemingly empty hands. It may not be for the total beginner but I was able to add it to my set immediately.
Cartesian Coins is beautiful production of 4 coins on a close up mat. This is a classic Sankey routine and it looks great. I will not be using it specifically but I will be using a utility move that he uses called the Turn Over Switch in another routine of mine. Basically this is a way to switch 2 coins with different dates, with a different signature, or even a gimmicked coin like a shell or folding coin seamlessly in the action of turning it over on the table.
Slick Splits is another classic Sankey coin production. It requires some more advanced moves but I was able to do it with about a days worth of practice. It is a very cool way to “split” coins, or duplicate them at the finger-tips.
Plastic Surgery was a fun little gem to find, I believe he has recently re-released this alone under a new name. Basically you suck a coin up through a straw! I love this concept and will be adding it to my repertoire for sure. It has a similar feel to a cigarette through coin and is almost as easy to do.
The Wipe off Principle is some great thinking. It is a bold off the cuff way to, wait for it, duplicate a signed coin! What?!?! How cool is that! Imagine the possibilities with this, you could split a signed coin, or perform a super clean coin to impossible location. The only thing I wish he would have done here is given a full routine. He kind of glazes over it and makes it seem like it is less of an idea than it really is.
The Television Bend is almost self working and looked so much better than I thought it would. A coin folds at a ninety degree angle almost instantly. This is super visual and looks great on film. It might be a little angle sensitive in real life but as long as you don’t have anybody watching from either side you are good to go for about 180 degrees.
No Jacket Required is a great 4 coins to pocket routine. This one is tough but very practical. All of the coins start and end in the same pocket and you don’t need a table. This one is worth learning.
The Newton Drop is a strange way to make a coin go from sleeve to sleeve. Its a bit angle sensitive but it is a fun alternative to the classic sleeve to sleeve jump popularized by David Roth.
Mass Consumption was very cool to watch it’s kind of a cannibal coins routine. Each coin is eaten by the next. It’s like watching slick splits in reverse, very cool.
The Messiah Vanish is my favorite thing on the DVD, It is a super clean very fooling complete vanish of a coin. This is my new go to when someone asks to see a trick.
The two fisted vanish is a fun way to turn coins into restaurant mints. A certain wardrobe is required for this but it ends up being a very powerful easy to do routine. With a couple hours of practice I’m sure most could have this down, especially if you are already familiar with coin magic.
Push Button is a fun odd ball effect where four coins pop out of a card case through the side of the box. Everything is completely examinable. I love this trick, it looks great and feels so organic. It looks and sounds like there are gimmicks involved but really everything could be borrowed.
Mr. Clean Coins across may be Jay’s most famous coin routine. While it is very good I prefered Mexican Jumping Coins. There are 5 or six coins across on the DVD so odds are you’ll find something you like. All of the coins across are pretty tough to learn though, they are not for the feint of heart.
On my DVD I got a handful of bonuses. These look like they were added after the fact so I’m not sure if your DVD will include these or not. On the Bonus material I liked the Transit switch, which combines some classic principles to make a fairly easy and visual switch that could be added to any spellbound routine. I also liked Bulletproof which was a fairly simple coins across that happens with the spectator holding your hands. I really like this concept.
So that’s it, there’s a lot on this DVD. Once again if I was a beginner in magic I might suggest you pick up a copy of Bobo’s Modern Coin magic or Metal Volume 1 from Eric Jones, but if you are experienced and looking for some routines or challenges this is the place to look!
