Sanchez Fly

Gabbay, David

David Gabbay

(Based on 2 reviews)
Sanchez Fly is David's handling of the classic fingertips coins across. The routine makes use of some of the most visual coin vanishes and appearances to bring you a fingertips coins across routine you will actually perform.

Sanchez fly uses a common coin gimmick you already have and has been tediously routined to start clean, end clean and instantly reset, making it a true "Real Worker."

Sanchez Fly is a mini-lesson in coin magic. David teaches fundamental handling techniques, lesser known moves and the subtleties essential in producing strong and thoughtful coin magic.

The Sanchez Fly download is shot in full 1080p HD with simultaneous head-on and over the shoulder views.

Super clear direct instruction ensures that you will learn the effect quickly and correctly. It will take practice, but heck, that's what magic is all about!

"Great coin work."
- Rocco

"It was smooth, direct, clean, crisp and clear, the way good magic should be! I am a fan."
- Rannie Raymundo "The Boss"

For $15 bucks you get a good and visual solution to a 3 fly routine that is using nothing original . . . just good combinations.

Gabbay has combined (and thoroughly credited) a series of moves and ideas and a standard coin gimmick to create a well thought out and smooth flowing routine. Oftentimes when I receive a DVD that's "Burned" rather than "Pressed" I assume that the quality will be poor . . . usually I'm right, but not this time. The lighting was excellent. Gabbay sounded great, and I could actually see the effect very clearly. Many coin DVDs I review have lighting issues, and I can't even see what the effect is.

Thank you Mr. Gabbay for being above that and producing a solid top notch DVD.

The routine itself can be seen in the preview. It's a standard looking 3 coins across at the fingertips routine (i.e., 3 Fly). However, Gabbay's combination of methods, techniques and gimmicks make this one of the cleaner looking versions out there.

If you're ever recruited to perform at a nudist colony, this routine will fit right in. The only issue I have with the routine is the final vanish. It's a bit more angle-sensitive than I'm personally comfortable with. Also, there is one move that requires you fingers to be moist (mine are anything but moist). He suggests that you can use spit, but the problem is that you are in a position of holding the coins in a certain way that makes it impossible to moisten your fingers without looking like you're trying elicit some sort of inappropriate response from the coins or the spectators.

Gabbay doesn't really address how to handle this.

That aside, the method for this is solid, starts clean (looking), and ends clean (looking). It really is a great solution for the plot, and the ad copy is absolutely accurate.

Final Verdict:
4.5 stars with a Stone Status of GEM.

“Sanchez Fly” is a version of the classic 3 Fly plot, which is, for those who don’t know, a coins across routine with 3 coins, but done visibly, at the fingertips. Created by Jonathan Townsend, and popularized at chest height by Chris Kenner, the 3 Fly plot has been tackled by many. Approaches to this plot range from using an extra coin to gimmicks specially engineered for the effect. In the case of “Sanchez Fly” the performer needs a gimmick, but it’s a basic one that most performers will have in their magic drawer.

The main question to ask is whether the magic community needs another version of 3 Fly, or more accurately, what does this version offer that others do not? On the plus side, one of the nicest touches is that at the beginning, middle and end the performer can cleanly display only 3 coins. For purists a potential negative is that the coins are all placed in the same hand twice in the middle of the effect, a moment most routines try to avoid. However, the cleanliness of the handling makes this less of an issue in this case. Interestingly, one of the most noticeable differences between “Sanchez Fly” and other versions of 3 Fly is the absence of the gag where the performer obviously moves the second coin to the receiving hand, only to have it immediately backfire and magically fly back to the original hand. While this gag was first created to get the performer one ahead, it has its theatrical benefits and its absence in this version may be missed by some. One final differentiator is that the third coin’s appearance is more visual than most handlings, and is quite eye popping.

The instruction on the DVD is clear, thorough and includes multiple angles, including screen in screen scenes. The complete explanation is followed by a quick walk through, making this a thorough learning experience. And while some of the moves in this routine are a bit “knacky,” they are not knuckle busting. Diligent practice will be required, but not the kind that takes years to develop.

For $15 the purchaser gets a well thought out, magical and thoroughly taught version of 3 Fly. Even if the routine as is doesn’t completely appeal to the viewer, the discerning performer can find value in some of the phases and alter others, which for $15 is still a bargain. If you view the trailer and like what you see, you can’t go wrong with “Sanchez Fly.”
