I love the work of Jean Emmanuel Franzis - it is magical and it appeals to my technical side. Writing and reciting scripts is not is strong point (even in French), but routining his act and entertaining you is.
One hitch I noticed off the bat was that the ad copy and the DVD case both mention an effect called 'Coins, No Purse, No Glass' but in the menu, you will find no mention of this again until you read the credits.
The menu layout is clean and direct. You can play the entire disc or you can select which performances or explanations you want to watch per the chapter selections.
The effects are all great in my opinion and each one has its strengths and weaknesses, depending on the venues you work in. Everything is shown and explained clearly. During both the performances and explanations (which are done one-on-one with a guest) you are guided by English dubbing and occasionally, text labels pop up where necessary.
The problem I have with the dubbing is that it is very spotty at times. That is not to say it is not sufficient enough for learning but I think it could have been much better, script-wise. In short, some of the sentences have word sequences that do not always make sense.
You will need to have a very strong grasp on basic coin sleights and techniques in order to accomplish some of the effects/routines on this disc - definitely not for the beginner. The coins used on the DVD are dollar-sized but any size can be used. Some of the routines use 6 silver coins so please note: If you only have four of whatever coins you will be using (most coin magic only uses four, at most), you will need to pick up two extra coins to match the ones you have.
The effects that I particularly enjoyed the most were his version of the John Ramsay classic, 'The Cylinder and Coins' (this one is a "cheap" version with no gaffs and is a killer), 'The Triple Change', his 'Coin Act' and the 'Three Coins and Mystery'.
The bonus section is clearly different from the rest of the DVD because it is just a shot of Jean Emmanuel performing and then explaining the effects. There are two bonuses, a 3 Fly and 'Undercover Coins'. The presentation of the 'Perfect 3 Fly' seemed a bit rushed, but the point of it was giving it as a demonstration, not a technical performance.
The style of the film in the bonus section is reminiscent of the old silent films - fuzzy around the edges with a clear focal point in the middle - except it is in color. The accompanying music for the 'Undercover Coins' will immediately remind you of Charlie Chaplin.
The crediting on this DVD is some of the best I have ever seen - it is full of references and is very thorough, listing not only the author but also the source.
Again the material on this disc is not for beginners but if you are an advanced intermediate coin magician or above, you will find plenty of things on this DVD to challenge you and it will inspire you to come up with different handlings to suit your style.
