Cameron Francis has created one of the most workable and visual Torn & Restored Card's EVER!
Your spectator selects a card and signs it on the face. You sign the card across the back.
The card is torn into quarters.
Then visually, magically and INCREDIBLY the card is reassembled quarter by quarter.
And at the end of the trick the spectator can take the miraculously restored card home with them!

Think of it this way, contamination is like dog poop. Radiation is like dog poop smell. A suit will keep the poop off of you, but the smell is still there. If you don’t want to get radiated, stay away from the radiation site. If you don’t want to get contaminated, wear a contamination suit. Now that I’ve got that out of my system, how ’bout I review Cameron’s DVD.
Effect: Piece by Piece torn and restored, signed card. The sub-title of the DVD is “Real World Torn & Restored Card.” The question is, does it live up to it’s name? We’ll answer that in a moment.
Production Quality: Big Blind Media is certainly setting a new standard for magic media. This DVD is right on par with other productions. Excellent sound, video, cinematography, etc, etc… Top Notch!
What you get: You get a DVD with the performance and the explanation plus five bonus effects.
Rehab Performance: This is a beautiful thing to watch. One of the best parts of the handling is that at each phase, you are very much showing your hands to be empty not concealing anything extra. The final corner restoration fooled me several times. In fact, I had no idea how he was doing it until I watched the explanation. Each piece is very clean and very visual. The only critique I would have for Cameron is something that we all tend to do. We all have our own little “pet phrases” that we say over and over.
We know that Jay Sankey’s is “Boom.” Mine is “Here’s the idea” and “Do me a favor.” Diamond Jim Davis’s is “The Bottom Line is…” Cameron’s got two: “Do me a favor” and “Tell you what.” On both this DVD and his Omega Mutation DVDs I actually counted how many times he said each of those phrases…
So let me talk directly to Cameron for a moment: Brother! The count was obscene, and I don’t want to publish it. Watch for it man. Be aware of it man. Being aware is half the battle. I’ve watching the footage of my upcoming DVD “Gemstones” and I say the word “Sweet” so many times that I’m nauseated.
Anyway, other than the abuse of those two phrases, the performance is great. It’s clean and visual.
Rehab Explanation: The camera angles, and clarity of the explanation are excellent. The entire explanation is shown from the front with a few shots of Cameron’s point of view. Then when completed, you get to watch the entire performance from Cameron’s point of view. It’s clear that he has put a lot of thought into the handling and performance angles.
Cameron’s goal was to be able to do this in close up restaurant work. In the explanation, he mentions that the handling he uses is the “gold plated” version. He shows you how to do it that way, how to construct the gimmick, etc. He also mentions that you don’t have to do it the way explains, that it’s possible to do it with less preparation, but he never explains how.
Also, no time is spent talking about how to prepare for a night of strolling when you would be planning to do this multiple times. Each time you perform it, you destroy your gimmick, so for each performance you need a gimmick. Most pros who perform know how to manage and get in and out of these things, but for the sake of completeness, it would have been nice for Cameron to tell us how many gimmicks he makes up per night and how he manages then, etc.
Still, even considering all of this, this effect/DVD is a Gem for sure. If you do close up magic and you are looking for a clean and virtually angle-proof piece by piece restoration, this fits the bill for sure.
Bonus Effect - A Strange Visit: A modification to the old classic Jennings effect with an added visual element, and a killer kicker at the end. The beauty of this too is that it can be done without a table whereas the original required you to spread the cards on the table. I love this effect. GEM!
Bonus Effect - Warped Fusion: Card Warp + Anniversary Waltz + Cameron Francis = Unromantic, yet super cool card trick with no gimmicked cards and no torn cards. Gem.
Bonus Effect - Prophetic: Simple, doable, and powerful. This takes Bill Simon’s business card turnover effect to a slightly different level making for a triple prediction. Very clever thinking on the part of Cameron. Gem.
Bonus Effect - X Marks the Spot: Cool little packet trick with some clever handling… An “X” is drawn on the back of four different cards. The X’s then disappear and reappear on the back of the selected card. The beauty of this is that you can reuse the same cards over and over and you don’t have to draw on new cards each time you do it. Clever Gem.
Bonus Effect - Striking Backs: I’ve never been a fan of the old “all backs” premise. This one I can almost handle. It’s a quick all backs routine with a packet of Jokers that magically become four aces. The four aces then magically find the selected card. Overall a good routine with a few magical moments. If I were to perform this, I would do it without the “all backs” portion. Still mostly a gem.
Final Thoughts: This DVD is definitely a GEM. Even if you’re not a T&R fan, there are some great effects on this DVD. Get it!
